Bollywood: Google Pixels Can Now Automatically Record & Share Videos In Emergency

The Personal Safety app for Google Pixel phones has landed a new feature that allows it to automatically record videos in emergency situations, back them up to the cloud, and also share them with trusted contacts alongside real-time location details. Google’s Pixel phones have cultivated a solid reputation over the years, thanks to their impressive photography chops and a clean Android experience with an assurance of fast updates. However, they also offer a ton of features and apps made by Google that are exclusive to the Pixel smartphones.

Some of the recent Pixel-exclusive features include call screening using the Google Assistant for blocking spam calls, letting the virtual assistant automatically picks up the call to verify the caller's identity before taking the necessary action. App suggestions make it easier to automatically customize the home screen with apps based on how frequently they are used, while the Time Lapse mode for astrophotography allows users to capture stunning long-exposure night sky shots. The Now Playing tool is Google’s very own take on the core premise of the Shazam app for automatically recognizing what music is playing and reporting it on the lock screen, while the Now Playing History expands on it.

Personal safety is another area where Pixel phones are a cut above the rest, with their latest addition being the car crash detection tool. Google is now making it even better with the rollout of a new feature in the eponymous Personal Safety app that automatically records a video and shares a downloadable link with emergency contacts. The new feature arrived with the app's v2021.08.27 update that began rolling out a few days ago. The feature can be accessed directly from the Settings app on Pixel devices running Android 12’s latest beta build by opening the Safety & Emergency option in the Settings app. Thankfully, the setup process of emergency video capture is quite easy as well.

All users need to do is open the Personal Safety app, tap on the 'Settings' icon in the top-left corner of the screen, and select the ‘Emergency SOS’ option at the top. On the Emergency SOS page, users will now find a new ‘Record emergency video’ option at the bottom, alongside a toggle that can be toggled to enable it. Tapping on the text opens a 'Recording Settings' page where users can customize the video recording and sharing behavior. At this stage, users have to grant a few permissions such as camera access and internet access for cloud access, if it hasn't already been enabled.

Enabling the ‘Auto share’ toggle will automatically upload the recorded video to the cloud and share a downloadable link with emergency contacts that users will be asked to add when they turn on this feature. As for the video itself, the Pixel phone will record a clip for up to 45 minutes, or lesser if users choose to disable the SOS alert mid-way. The recording will happen in the background so that users can continue to use their phones. Google says that the videos are compressed to save storage and to make it quicker for the cloud upload on the linked Google Account to complete and generate a shareable link.
