Why Ted Lasso Season 3 Will Be All About Redeeming Nate

Here's why Ted Lasso season 3 will be all about redeeming Nate (Nick Mohammed). Nate has seen a meteoric rise in station since the beginning of the Apple TV+ series. He started out as the humble kit man for AFC Richmond, showing surprise when Ted (Jason Sudeikis) even acknowledges him much less remembers his name. After demonstrating his good ideas, Nate receives an unorthodox promotion from kit man to coach where he continues to shine. His most prolific moment comes when, in the absence of Ted, Nate makes late substitutions in the game against Tottenham which results in a surprising win.

His ascension to significance, however, has not always brought out the best in Nate. He has shown that his newfound confidence is easily subverted and replaced by a cruelly vindictive spirit. Over the course of season 2, Nate has suffered insults, whether deliberate or not, at the hands of his father, the players of AFC Richmond, and even kindhearted Ted himself. Audiences have seen the darkness growing in Nate's storyline as his fragile ego is tested, and Ted Lasso season 2, episode 10, "No Weddings and a Funeral," finally reveals how his negativity will manifest. After making an uncharacteristically kind gesture to Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), her ex-husband, Rupert (Anthony Head), approaches Nate, whispers something in his ear, and pats him on the back. It's clear to viewers that something is brewing between the two.

Nate's buildup of negativity in season 2 of Ted Lasso and Rupert's sudden, atypical kindness certainly suggest that some duplicitous scheme is forthcoming. That being said, Ted Lasso is all about characters making mistakes and learning from them, so audiences can hope that whatever Nate gets involved in, he can ultimately be redeemed. However, with only two episodes remaining in the second season, it's unlikely that whatever conflict arises will be resolved until season 3.

Nate's dark path appears to be leading towards him betraying his friends at AFC Richmond. His brief chat with Rupert, who always seems to be scheming against Rebecca, sets him up as the perfect inside man for whatever deceitful plot the ex-owner of AFC Richmond has planned. Viewers have already seen how vindictive he can be when Nate takes his anger out on Will and having endured some slight from nearly every member of the AFC Richmond crew, the club is his next logical target as his insecurities mount.

But although Nate seems doomed to forsake his friends and club, it's unlikely that he will fall beyond redemption. Ted Lasso has already shown that characters can redeem themselves from betraying their club and friends through Rebecca's season 1 storyline. Nate's treachery will no doubt sting even more considering that Ted and Rebecca have been so good to him in the past, promoting him to coach and helping him with his self-confidence. It will especially hurt Coach Lasso who makes such a point to try and bolster those around him, but his redemption is still highly probable. Season 2 of Ted Lasso has seen significant growth in most of the other major characters, so if they can't find it within themselves to understand Nate's actions and forgive him, most of the show's overarching themes will have been ignored.

Fans of Ted Lasso still have a lot coming in what has proven to be by far the show's darkest season. Having already dealt with death, paternal traumas, and mental health, season 2 seems to be careening towards a grim betrayal the likes of which could ruin the beloved members of AFC Richmond. Redemption and a happy ending may be waiting in the distant future of season 3, but Nate and the other characters of Ted Lasso still have a long way to go before they get there.
