Tomorrow War 2: Chris Pratt & First Film's Director In Talks To Return

[The following contains spoilers for The Tomorrow War]

The Tomorrow War 2 may be happening as Chris Pratt and director Chris McKay are reportedly in talks to return for the sequel. Amazon paid $200 million to acquire the sci-fi epic The Tomorrow War from Skydance and it turned out to be a great investment as a reported 2.4 million households streamed the movie when it arrived last weekend.

The Tomorrow War stars Pratt as a former Army Ranger who’s called to service under the most unexpected of circumstances: soldiers from the future have come back in time seeking fighters to battle a race of relentless alien invaders who are ravaging Earth. What ensues is a wild time-spanning sci-fi adventure that sees Pratt teaming up with the future version of his own daughter (Yvonne Strahovski) to find a way to destroy the alien menace once and for all. The movie also stars J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson and Edwin Hodge.

After The Tomorrow War drew huge streaming audiences across the world it’s no surprise that Amazon and Skydance are reportedly putting together a sequel. According to Deadline, Pratt and McKay are both in talks to return for the follow-up, as are screenwriter Zach Dean as well as cast members Strahovski, Gilpin, Richardson, Hodge and Simmons.

Pratt is of course no stranger to heading up big series after leading Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy. But The Tomorrow War feels like it belongs to Pratt even more than either of those franchises, as Jurassic World is built upon the long-running Jurassic Park brand while Guardians is more of an ensemble piece than something that depends on one big name star. In fact, some might argue Pratt’s star has waned in recent years – Marvel fans certainly enjoy dogging his Guardians character Star-Lord – which makes Tomorrow War that much more of a triumph for the actor.

Clearly talks for The Tomorrow War 2 are in their very early stages so it’s hard to say what the story would be about. However, sequel possibilities were very clearly set up by the first film as Pratt’s character was forced to leave behind his future daughter at a very dramatic moment to go backward in time and save his own world from the alien menace using the toxin she created. If Strahovski is in talks to return for the Tomorrow War sequel, that’s a good indication the story would return to the future and likely see Pratt trying to help her save her world too. The sequel would also presumably have to address the matter of Pratt's character's fate, as it's revealed in the first movie that he's destined to die in a car crash. McKay has also teased that a sequel could go to the aliens' homeworld and explore their purpose.

The Tomorrow War 2 if it happens would give Amazon an action franchise to rival Netflix, which is set to roll out sequels to its own hit movies The Old Guard and Extraction, and will also release Knives Out 2. Amazon of course recently acquired loads of other new properties to potentially make into franchises when they bought out MGM. And of course Disney+ has Marvel, while HBO Max has DC. The streaming franchise wars are indeed getting hotter than ever.
