Bethesda Honors Dogmeat With Dog Shelter Charity Donation

Xbox and Bethesda Studios honored Fallout 4’s Dogmeat with a dog shelter charity donation, after the character’s real-life counterpart passed away in June. River, who many know as Dogmeat in Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic RPG, passed away at the end of June and received a loving eulogy from her owner, Joel Burgess. Burgess, who worked on Fallout 4, spoke highly of his relationship with River and how the dog inspired the loveable companion in one of Bethesda’s most memorable games.

Joel Burgess, who worked as a game designer and lead level designer on Fallout 4, announced River’s passing via Twitter on June 27, honoring his faithful companion and her legacy. Burgess revealed that River was an integral part of the Fallout 4 development process, inspiring the Fallout 4 Dogmeat team to create the beloved companion as immortalized in the game. By digging into the hearts of game developers and audiences alike, River assisted in the process of making Dogmeat a standout character in the RPG - and even won Top Video Game Dog of 2015 at the World Dog Awards in the process. Burgess provided fans with River's story online in a hybrid dev diary and eulogy spanning the development process of Fallout 4 as River was digitized into the game.

To honor River’s work, Xbox announced on Twitter that it and Bethesda are donating $10,000 to the Montgomery County Humane Society. Writing “DOGMEAT FOREVER,” at the top of the post, Xbox and Bethesda were quick to remember Dogmeat’s importance in making Fallout 4 a smash hit, solidifying the franchise's success under Bethesda after Fallout 3. The tweet also provides a link that allows fans to follow in Bethesda’s footsteps and donate to the humane society, which provides vaccinations and heartworm tests to animals in need and covers the costs of transportation, spay/neuter appointments, and surgeries for animals in more severe conditions.

The Xbox and Bethesda donation is an excellent way to honor Dogmeat and his real-life inspiration, River. Dogmeat was an instant hit among gamers and grounded Fallout 4 despite the radioactive world's more fantastical super mutants, deathclaws, and Assaultrons. The Dogmeat companion was one of the most memorable characters in the game, providing an in-game relationship that warmed hearts, much like dogs give their humans in the real world. River added grace and personality to Dogmeat's digital design, making the character into more than just a virtual companion, but a true friend to many.

Though River’s passing is sad, her legacy lives on permanently in Bethesda’s RPG, as a permanent reminder of the influence animals have on the human world. After River’s real-life behavior inspired that of Fallout 4's Dogmeat’s, it’s as thoough she will truly live forever within the code, roaming the countryside and barking up a storm at Red Rocket Truck Stop with anyone who boots up the game.
