Animal Crossing Player's Scary Optical Illusion Is Always Looking At You

An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player has created an eerie yet cool optical illusion using in-game items. Players of the Nintendo hit are finding new and exciting ways to decorate their islands with the tools at hand, and while fans wait for an Animal Crossing update, this is certainly one way to create a show-stopping getaway.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons may have launched as a new addition to the beloved franchise, but a year from release it's arguably become more of a designer's toolkit than a video game. Once the game is completed through a series of challenges designed to turn basic islands into thriving villages, players are left with little to do aside from decorating their paradises. The game still has endless players and communities devoted to it, but gamers desperately want to see substantial new content. Nintendo of American President Doug Bowser has promised new Animal Crossing content is coming though it's not known when.

While fans wait for new additions, one Animal Crossing player has taken it upon themselves to create mystical and creepy optical illusions within their island getaway. Reddit user SharkBoobies shared a clip of their character wandering in front of a carefully curated display that appears to show faces watching the player as they move. The eerie optical illusion is created using Face-Cutout Standees with hats designed to look like eyeballs sitting on Log Benches behind them. Noh Masks are also used to a similar effect, peering out from behind standees to watch the player's every step.

SharkBoobies notes that the unique and incredibly creative Animal Crossing island optical illusion was in fact inspired by one of the works of Japanese manga artist and writer, Junji Ito. Ito's work is known for its awe-striking terror and the piece which inspired SharkBoobies' creation is The Hanging Balloons. Fans of Ito's will want to check out SharkBoobies' Instagram, sharks.crossing, as the user is working to turn their whole island into a tribute to the horror creator. Sadly, SharkBoobies has yet to share the Dream Address for the island, so players wanting to visit might have to wait until it's fully complete.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have found many ingenious ways to design their islands, oftentimes challenging Nintendo's restrictions on the game. The now-infamous Animal Crossing pool glitch is another way designers and photographers have created incredible illusions within the game, using items with either limited or no functionality. It's hoped that future Animal Crossing updates will not only introduce new gameplay, but also new ways for users to interact with the worlds they've created. Some in-game items do have limited functions, but most are decorative only or offer mild functionality, such as balls bouncing while still being unable to be played with. However, as evidenced by SharkBoobies, even the most mundane items can be transformed into something else entirely with a little creativity.
