Batman: The Long Halloween Sequel Comic Will Reveal New Secrets

DC Comics has announced that writer Jeff Loeb and artist Tim Sale are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Batman's most mysterious adventure with a sequel to Batman: The Long Halloween. The official title for the sequel comic is Batman: The Long Halloween Special. The new one-shot will be written by Loeb, drawn by Sale, and colored by Brennan Wagner. According to DC, the special will be forty-eight pages long and will release on October 12.

Batman: The Long Halloween continues on from Frank Miller's Batman Year One. Set in the caped crusader's early days as Gotham's masked protector, it follows Batman as he tries to uncover the identity of the mysterious Holiday murderer. Batman's uncatchable villain is given their nickname as they kill new people on every holiday. Month by month, bodies start to rack up as Batman continually tries to find out the true killer. The comic is also notable for following the transition of Batman's main villains from small-time criminals to full-on supervillains.

According to DC ComicsThe Batman: The Long Halloween Special will continue on from the events of the original comic. Loeb will expand on from where he left off, perhaps shining a light on some of the ambiguities of the original series' ending. DC has confirmed that the one-shot will revisit many of the old characters seen in the miniseries, such as Two-Face. Harvey Dent features on Sale's variant cover for the special, indicating that he will have a large part to play in the forty-eight-page one-shot. Fans of the now-iconic series are being treated extra as this comes on the heels of DC releasing two animated films based on the comic book.

Among the returning characters, Holiday will most likely return. Batman: The Long Halloween's ending is quite ambiguous as they never outright reveal who Holiday is. The true identity is left to readers to figure out. Throughout the series, speculation is pinned on three main antagonists; Alberto Falcone, Harvey Dent, and his wife. Most of it is pinned on Falcone who ends up going to Arkham as the Holiday killer, though there are more than enough hints that the killer's true identity is Harvey Dent's wife, Gilda. It's likely that Loeb will expand on Holiday's mystery as the special gives him a unique opportunity to dig deeper. However, knowing how mysterious the original series was, don't go in expecting outright answers.

Currently, DC Comics has released barely any story information about the plot. The details of its story will probably spoil some major points that they are trying to hide. Most notably, that Holiday will return. As of now, the only known returning character aside from Batman is Two-Face, thanks to the variant covers. Expect more information to drop as October nears closer. In the end, it's exciting to see the acclaimed duo of Loeb and Sale return to their seminal Batman: The Long Halloween world as fans have been long asking for it.
