Venom 2 Tracking To Have 2nd Highest October Debut Behind 2018's Joker

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is poised to have the second biggest October box office take ever. The film, which opened this weekend, is a follow-up to the 2018 hit Venom, which ended up at #11 for domestic box office that year. While the weekend is still ongoing, the film already hit number 1 in the box office on its opening Thursday. Directed by Andy Serkis, Venom 2 stars Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Stephen Graham, Reid Scott, and Peggy Lu.

Let There Be Carnage follows up on the promise made by the end-credits sequence in the original film. Eddie Brock, who is still getting the hang of being fused with his alien symbiote Venom, seeks to get back into the game as a reporter by interviewing notorious serial killer Cletus Kasady (Harrelson). However, when Kasady bonds with his own symbiote, Carnage, they escape and begin to wreak havoc all over San Francisco along with Harris' secondary villain Shriek. This will force Venom and Eddie to fast-forward through their growing pains in order to save the city yet again.

Even with Marvel ignoring Venom 2 on their social media, the film is projected to devour the October box office. Per Deadline, the film is projected to make between $71.3 million and $81.3 million in its opening weekend. If it hits that latter number, it would be the second-best October opening weekend ever, behind Joker and just ahead of the original Venom. Regardless, it has already had the second-best Friday during the pandemic behind Marvel's Black Widow.

Marvel comic book movies have generally been the key to resuscitating domestic box office in recent months. Shang-Chi became the first movie to pass $200 million post-2020, in addition to breaking all kinds of records for Labor Day and September box office numbers. Additionally, Black Widow and Shang-Chi are sitting comfortably at #1 and #2 in the yearly box office respectively.

Venom 2 is already sitting at #22 after just 2 days, and quickly rising through the ranks. Even though the film isn't in the MCU proper and it's likely to be lapped by Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home, it's proving that it can play in the big leagues as well. While the weekend needs to close before the numbers can be fully counted, Venom: Let There Be Carnage can certainly already be considered one of the great box office successes of 2021.
