Darth Vader Has Incredible Force Powers Fans Never Saw in the Movies

Due to the unnatural abilities granted by the dark side, Darth Vader has a variety of sinister powers seen in the pages of Marvel Comics' multiple Star Wars series, and that includes his ability to manipulate the dead. For example, Charles Soule's Darth Vader and his more recent run on Marvel's primary Star Wars series feature different scenarios in which Vader displays a level of control over the deceased (including his late wife Padmé Amidala).

In 2017's Darth Vader series from Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli, Darth Vader was granted the world of Mustafar by the Emperor to serve as his base of operations and a reminder of Anakin Skywalker's death on the world, giving way for his own birth as Darth Vader. Using the spirit of the Sith architect Momin, Vader constructed his imposing castle above a locus of dark side power, using it as a massive tuning fork to harness his power for something truly dark and unnatural. Once the castle was built, Vader was able to open a doorway to the other side. While he seemingly discovered the spirit of his late wife Padmé in the nether realm, she refused to go with him back to the land of the living, recognizing that the husband she had known was corrupted and no more.

While Vader's attempt to bring back the dead on Mustafar occurred not long after Revenge of the Sith, his next display of power over the dead can be seen in 2020's Star Wars #6 from Charles Soule and Jesus Saíz in the days after Empire Strikes Back. With Luke Skywalker determined to continue his Jedi path despite having learned the truth about Vader being his father, he came across an abandoned Jedi outpost from the High Republic. However, Vader himself had long been aware of the outpost, and he had set a trap for anyone who dared enter its doors. Sure enough, when Luke discovered the outpost and found his new yellow-bladed lightsaber, he was attacked by the Grand Inquisitor. While it was believed that the Inquisitor had died in Star Wars Rebels years prior, it was revealed that he had been cursed by Vader, who used his power to maintain his servant's existence, refusing to let him fully die which was confirmed when Luke escaped before Vader arrived.

Using both of these scenarios as evidence, it appears as though Vader has some level of dark side necromancy, an ability that was never featured in the films. That being said, Palpatine did promise the ability to cheat death as the primary temptation for Anakin Skywalker when he seduced him to the dark side of the Force, as Anakin wanted to prevent the premonitions he saw of Padmé dying in childbirth. As such, it makes sense that Vader would focus his efforts on learning how to bring back the dead (Padmé) as well as to learn how to prevent the deaths of others even after she was gone (The Grand Inquisitor).

All in all, it's interesting to see that while Palpatine didn't lie to Anakin, there are obvious consequences that come from Vader's unseen powers on screen. While the Grand Inquisitor still exists, he's living a cursed life as a burning spirit, appearing to be trapped in the state of his fiery death from Star Wars Rebels. Not only that, but it's clear that he wants to die so he can finally be at peace, something Vader won't allow. As such, one has to wonder: if Darth Vader had had the same level of power and knowledge when his wife died in Revenge of the Sith, would he still have prevented her from fully dying, giving her a similarly cursed existence just so they could be together in the Star Wars galaxy?
