Tensions Between The X-Men And Marvel's Other Heroes Are Getting Worse

Potential spoilers for Children of the Atom #2 ahead!

The relationship between the X-Men and the Avengers is growing tense, and it points to a building tension between the mutant community on Krakoa and the rest of the world. Readers see the sparks fly in a preview for Children of the Atom #2, on sale in print and digital April 14.

In the previous issue, readers were introduced to a new team of X-Men, called “The Young X-Men,” and apparently possessing powers similar to that of the X-Men. The team fought a group of mutants who had lost their powers on M-Day, attracting the attention of the regular X-Men team, who dispatched Pixie and Maggot to meet with the new group. Once they returned to Krakoa, they debated what to do about the Young X-Men, ultimately deciding to keep an eye on them. These Young X-Men are operating outside of Krakoan jurisdiction, and in issue two of Children of the Atom, readers learn this young team of mutants may be helping escalate tensions between Krakoa and the outside world.

In the preview, the Avengers, including Captain America, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel, visit the Krakoan embassy in New York to discuss the Young X-Men; they are concerned about the team running afoul of Kamala’s Law, which Mystique, who was greeting them, called a “ridiculous” human law. The situation continues to break down, with Mystique and Jamie Madrox trading barbed comments with the Avengers. Storm arrives, but even her presence is not enough to assuage tensions—at one point she curtly tells Captain America to refer to her as “Storm,” and not her birth name. Storm ultimately tells the Avengers the mutants will take care of their own, before having them seen out.

Since the founding of Krakoa, Earth’s mutants have found a safe haven, away from a world that hates and takes steps to exterminate them - a fact Storm points out. She tells the Avengers their services are not wanted and to leave. Captain America tries to use his long-standing friendship with Storm to ease matters, but it only makes the situation worse. This may seem harsh as the two were friends, but in light of how mutants are treated in the outside world, and how much of a safe space Krakoa is, it is easy to see the X-Men are going to be defensive about their affairs and their homeland.

The Avengers and the X-Men have tangled before, but now the stakes are more than just two teams having a disagreement. There are issues of politics, borders and international law to consider now. Children of the Atom #2 is written by Vita Ayala with art by Bernard Chang and colors by Marcelo Maiolo; it is in stores and digital platforms April 14.
