Psychological thrillers are the kind of movies that anyone can enjoy. Some people don't like horror movies or romcoms, but it's hard to deny the anticipation and thrills that viewers get when it comes to a good psych thriller. Movies are about escaping reality and enjoying another narrative for a while. With this sub-genre, viewers get to go on an adventure that delves into the minds of heroes, villains, and even supernatural creatures. These movies made the audience think, and that’s why they’re so attractive.
Because of their demand, streaming services have picked up and released many quality movies that explore psychological stories of deceit, abuse, delusion, and mental breakdowns. 10 The Strange Ones: 5.1 (2017)
Nick (Alex Pettyfer) and a boy named Sam (James Freedson-Jackson) are making their way across the United States after a house fire. Along the way, they meet other people during the trip, they tell them they're brothers when in reality, they aren't. During the trip, Nick's true intentions arise, giving viewers a sense that there are darker deeds are at hand. Sam's interpretation of reality and fantasy becomes difficult to differentiate as he and Nick continue on with their journey towards a second chance.
Christopher Radcliff and Lauren Wolkstein's The Strange Ones is an affecting and haunting psychological thriller with a powerful performance from Jackson.
9 Always Shine: 5.7 (2016)
Always Shine is directed by Black Christmas' Sophia Takal and stars Anna (Mackenzie Davis) and Beth (Caitlin FitzGerald), who are best friends with a competitive and jealous streak between one another. To smooth things over, they decide to take a long weekend trip to Big Sur, California. The trip is filled with tension, and there comes a point when things bubble over. Will their past catch up with them or will the women get past their differences? Either way, the trip is about to change their lives forever.
Takal delivers a stark and forceful study of toxic friendships. Davis' shocking portrayal as the embittered Anna will stay embedded in viewers' memories.
8 Climax: 7.0 (2018)
Selva (Sofia Boutella) is a French urban dancer who attends a three-day rehearsal in a closed-down boarding school. Located in the middle of the woods, the dancers dance one last dance, complete with a bowl of sangria to get things going.
Shortly after they start the rehearsal, the dancers realize the sangria has been spiked, resulting in a strange madness taking over all of them. No one knows who would drug them or why, and it’s becoming more difficult to control their urges and psychoses while trying to keep the rhythm to the music. The situation is pure bliss to some, while others feel like they’re on a one-way ticket to hell.
7 Frailty: 7.2 (2001)
A psychological crime drama directed by the late Bill Paxton, Frailty focuses on the unique relationship two little boys have with their overly religious father. Bill Paxton stars as Dad Meiks and confesses to his sons that God has asked him to “destroy” demons masked as humans, but the mission must be kept a secret. The boys help him with his work while they question if their father is losing his mind.
Years later, an older Fenton (Matthew McConaughey) walks into the local police station and confesses a sin of his brother’s. Wesley Doyle (Powers Boothe) is the FBI agent who listens to Adam’s story as he claims his brother is the “God’s Hand Killer.” As Booth listens and goes along with Fenton’s story, he’s taken down a twisty path of reality and fantasy.
6 Dead Ringers: 7.3 (1988)
The 1988 psychological thriller Dead Ringers centers on The Mantle brothers (Jeremy Irons), who are both gynecologists and identical twins. They often have fun switching places, but the psyche of Elliot is stronger than Beverly’s. In turn, Elliot romances a woman first, and once he’s ready to move on, he gives her to Beverly.
One day, when an actress named Claire Niveau (Geneviéve Bujold) comes into the clinic, she becomes entangled with the brothers, and Beverly becomes emotionally attached. When he starts abusing prescription drugs with Claire, jealousy ensues, and the twins’ long-time charade is brought to light. Dead Ringers won several awards and has remained in the Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time.
5 The Lighthouse: 7.5 (2019)
Shot entirely in black and white film, The Lighthouse tells the story of two lighthouse keepers named Thomas Howard (Robert Pattinson) and Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe), who are tasked with the same station. As a storm hits the island, they are stranded and descend into madness as the isolation affects their mental state.
The Lighthouse is directed by Robert Eggers, known for his equally polarizing movie, The Witch. Since The Lighthouse was released, it’s been named one of the best black-and-white movies of the 2010s.
4 A Simple Plan: 7.5 (1998)
Known for his cult horror series, The Evil Dead, director Sam Raimi directs A Simple Plan, which stars A-list cast Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda Brent Briscoe. The premise is as simple as the title; when three intellectually challenged men come across a crashed plane, they find $4.4 million inside.
They initially make a pact to keep the money a secret, but doubt begins to creep into their minds, and a game of lies, deceit, and murder ensue them. The late Bill Paxton has starred in many successful movies, and A Simple Plan remains in his top ten.
3 We Need To Talk About Kevin: 7.5 (2011)
We Need To Talk About Kevin is based on the 2003 novel written by Lionel Shriver and focuses on the lives of Eva Khatchadourian (Tilda Swinton) and her children. Her son Kevin (Rock Duer/Jasper Newell/Ezra Miller) is difficult and distant. As he grows up, he starts to act out, and alarming incidents begin to happen, such as his sister Celia (Ashley Gerasimovich) getting blinded in one eye.
As a teenager, he commits a heinous crime. Although there isn’t a resolution to his behavior, the story is intriguing and shows how dangerous humankind can be when mental manipulation comes into play.
2 Zodiac: 7.7 (2007)
David Fincher’s Zodiac is set in the late 1960s and early 1970s and is loosely based on The Zodiac Killer’s real case. It centers on a cartoonist who labels himself an amateur detective after becoming interested in the mysterious case of letters and cryptic messages.
With an A-list cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox, and John Carroll Lynch, it's no wonder Zodiac remains one of Fincher’s most successful movies.
