Evil Season 2: Release Date, Cast & Story Details | Screen Rant

When will Evil season 2 release and what will the story be about? The first season of the supernatural drama premiered all the way back in September 2019 and immediately became a smash hit for CBS thanks to its intriguing premise and unique characters. The first season started out strong and grew stronger, with the network quickly ordering a second season less than a month after the premiere.

The show follows Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), a skeptical forensic psychologist, who is hired by David Acosta (Mike Colter) to help him in his investigations. David is studying to be a Catholic priest, and his role for the Church is to investigate potential cases of demonic possession. Kristen and David's relationship is the quintessential skeptic-believer dynamic, which creates much of the tension. They're aided by the third member of their team, Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi), who operates as the trio's tech expert and equipment guy.

Like almost every show in the past year, the second season was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but a second season is indeed on the way. It should be noted that Evil season 2 will air on Paramount+, not CBS, the network ostensibly hoping that the hit series will draw more viewers to its new streaming platform. Here's everything we know about and what to expect from Evil season 2.

As mentioned above, CBS moved quickly to greenlight Evil season 2. Season 1 premiered on September 26, 2019, and on October 22, less than a month later, CBS renewed the supernatural series for a second season. Of the five new series CBS premiered in fall 2019, Evil is one of only two series to not have been canceled in the past year, an indicator of its strong performance.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming for Evil season 2 was delayed, but picked up again in October 2020 and wrapped in June 2021. In May 2021, it was announced that the 13-episode second season was moving from CBS to streaming platform Paramount+, a decision made after seeing how successful the series was in its initial release on Netflix. The second season is set to premiere on Sunday, June 20 on Paramount+.

The cast of Evil season 2 isn't expected to lose any major characters so it should be largely the same lineup as season 1. The main trio of Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, and Aasif Mandvi are expected to return, as is Michael Emerson as Leland Townsend, the series' creepy protagonist. So are series regulars Christine Lahti as Katja's free-spirited mother, Sheryl, and Kurt Fuller as Kristen's therapist and colleague, Dr. Kurt Boggs. Marti Matulis, who plays several of the show's recurring demonic characters, should also be reprising his role.

Due to the pandemic delays, it was reported last fall that Evil season 2 had to adjust to become a more character-focused season. The season 1 finale suggested that Kristen killed the obsessed stalker Orson LeRoux in self-defense, but left it on a cliffhanger. The trailer for season 2 seems to confirm she did, so she'll likely be struggling with the weight of that act. The question of whether or not she's possessed, which was hinted at when she was burned by a cross in the season 1 finale, should be a major storyline of season 2.

Meanwhile, as David grows closer to his ordination, he'll struggle even more with temptation in the form of his feelings for Kristen and his divine visions. Ben's story is also expected to get a boost this season, as he'll be dealing with night terrors that prey on his darkest fears, shaking his innate skepticism. Leland will reportedly ask for an exorcism early in season 2–but whether or not he's just being manipulative is the question. During the virtual New York Comic Con 2020 panel, co-creator Robert King confirmed the second season will be creative in its scares, explaining, "We have, I would say, five or six new scary things this year." (via EW) Luckily, there's not much longer to wait until Evil season 2 answers these questions.

Evil season 2 premieres Sunday, June 20 on Paramount+. New episodes release every Sunday.
