Batman Was Just Arrested For Murdering One Of His Closest Allies

Warning! Spoilers for Batman: The Detective #3 by DC Comics below.

Batman was just arrested for murdering the man who helped train him and fine-tune his skills as a detective and manhunter. In Batman: The Detective, Bruce Wayne is put under arrest for the murder of Henri Ducard, after his former mentor was thrown off of a building by a group of villains who are desperate to kill everyone that Batman has ever saved in his time as the Dark Knight.

Henri Ducard has a history with Batman in the pages of DC Comics, as the "world's greatest manhunter" first appeared in Detective Comics #599 and was created by Denys Cowan and Sam Hamm. In his stories, he's responsible for training Bruce Wayne as a detective and manhunter. However, Ducard's penchant for killing and willingness to work with bad guys ultimately split his and Bruce's friendship apart - even though Ducard is one of the few people who know Batman's real identity. In Batman: The Detective, Ducard was seemingly murdered and cops seem to think Bruce Wayne killed his former mentor.

Batman: The Detective #3 by Tom Taylor, Andy Kubert, Sandro Hope, Brad Anderson, And Clem Robins, opens with Batman rushing Ducard to the hospital after he was shot multiple times by a group of villains wearing white Batman suits, who (for mysterious reasons) want to murder everyone the hero has ever saved. As Ducard is worked on, the story flashes back to a young Bruce and the manhunter meeting. The comic shows how they grew close and eventually fell out after Ducard murdered a man who captured Bruce. It also shows Batman taking in Ducard for murder after stopping a nuclear bomb from going off in a subway station. Back in the present timeline, Bruce is arrested for the murder of Henri Ducard.

It appears Bruce is being set up by the evil organization that's killing the people he's saved - but are they aware of his secret identity like Ducard is? Obviously, he's not responsible for Ducard's death - if he's even dead, as the comic doesn't show him die officially. Still, the police seem to have enough evidence to bring Bruce in for murdering his mentor. Although, it's also fully possible Ducard could be getting some revenge for Bruce turning him in previously to the cops, as seen in the issue's flashbacks. Ducard does have friends in high places.

Is Ducard really dead? Can Bruce somehow shake the charges? Readers will get answers to those questions in upcoming issues of Batman: The Detective. Issue 3 is in comic book stores now.
