Deathloop's Multiplayer Invasions & Rival Assassin Julianna Explained

In a deep dive video presented at QuakeCon 2021, developer Arkane Studios presented an in-depth look at Deathloop's multiplayer mechanics surrounding Julianna. The new project from the Dishonored and Prey developer will combine first-person shooter gameplay with a unique time loop mechanic. Although initially intended for a release in 2020, numerous delays pushed Deathloop's release date to September 14, 2021.

Deathloop appears to closely follow in the footsteps of Arkane's Dishonored series, which cast players in the role of a supernatural assassin in a grim steampunk world. Deathloop will take gamers to a brand-new setting, the Art Deco island of Blackreef, but superpowers and assassinations are still on the menu for protagonist Colt. The title's time loop mechanic will also shake things up dramatically, as players can no longer simply reload a previous save when they get spotted or killed. Instead, when Colt is killed the player is sent back to the beginning of the game, though they are able to retain information on their targets and some acquired items. Finally, an asymmetrical multiplayer Invasion mechanic will allow other players to take the role of rival assassin Julianna, whose sole mission is to kill Colt and thwart his plans.

A showcase from QuakeCon 2021, posted to YouTube by publisher Bethesda Softworks, gives an in-depth look at Deathloop's competitive Invasion mode. Choosing to play as Julianna brings players to a starting hub, where they can customize the deadly assassin's arsenal of weapons and abilities as well as cosmetic items. Players can also choose to invade the campaign of a random player or a friend. Various mechanics make playing as Colt and Julianna very distinct, such as Colt possessing extra lives while Julianna only has one shot to take down her target. For Colt players, facing off with and defeating invaders, rather than running or hiding from them, can reward some exciting loot such as weapons or powers.

While Deathloop's fast-paced shooting, time loop mechanic and multiplayer invasions are unique additions to the Arkane formula, the title certainly seems to carry on the studio's legacy of immersive single-player experiences. Fascinating dialogue between various characters seems to be a focus, with protagonist Colt having a bombastic and expressive personality of his own. His relationship with Julianna, and the rest of his various marks, will help maintain Arkane's signature focus on world-building and narrative.

With an impressive resume of titles behind it, Arkane Studios seems unwilling to rest on its laurels. Deathloop borrows some basic ideas from Dishonored, but a number of brand new additions promise to make the upcoming shooter a wholly unique experience. The game's Invasion mechanic also seems to be more than a simple bonus mode, with time spent ensuring that Julianna and Colt play very differently. While the game's single-player campaign is still the main focus, ruining another player's day as the rival Julianna seems to lie close to the heart of Deathloop.
