Back 4 Blood Won't Have Left 4 Dead's Versus Campaigns

A Turtle Rock Studios developer told curious fans that its upcoming title Back 4 Blood will not feature gameplay modes akin to Versus in Left 4 Dead. Widely considered a spiritual successor to the popular Valve IP, Back 4 Blood aims to modernize the team-focused zombie shooter concept that pervades its beloved predecessor. Turtle Rock and publisher WB Interactive Entertainment announced the ambitious project in early 2019, then properly showed it off at the 2020 Game Awards.

Initially scheduled for a console and PC release in late June, Turtle Rock Studios and WB delayed the title to mid-October, simply noting the team needed more time to deliver the best game possible. The studio is still giving players a chance to try their hand at the zombie shooter ahead of launch, though. From August 5 through August 9, those who pre-ordered the four-player game can access a closed beta. Turtle Rock plans to open the beta to all players from August 12 through August 16. With Back 4 Blood's first beta phase currently ongoing, future fans have additional questions about the experience's final form.

One fan question, in particular, is making the rounds courtesy of Reddit user RadiumPwd, who shared a Discord exchange between a player and developer. The Discord user asked Turtle Rock to confirm whether or not Back 4 Blood would feature a mode similar to Versus in Left 4 Dead. Studio Co-Founder and Design Director Chris Aston responded with a simple, "no." According to RadiumPwd, someone else asked why such a gameplay option didn't make the cut, to which Turtle Rock answered, "We have a lot of defensive equipment and our specials are good at ambushing. Defending worked far better for our game than running from A-B."

Left 4 Dead's competitive mode, Versus pits two teams of four against one another in a challenge that allows each squad to take turns playing the roles of Infected and Survivors. Every Versus match features two turns total; thus, when it's time for the switch, the group previously holding the title of Survivors become the Infected and vice versa.

By most accounts, those well-versed in multiplayer-related fun consider Left 4 Dead's Versus mode the cream of the crop. Suffice it to say, this may explain the disappointment fans feel in learning that such a feature won't be replicated in the brand's eagerly-anticipated spiritual successor.
