Bachelorette: Kaitlyn Sticks Up for Katie After Greg's Self-Elimination

The Bachelorette co-host Kaitlyn Bristowe sided with Katie Thurston following Greg Grippo's exit. Greg dramatically eliminated himself from the dating show after telling Katie he was in love with her and not getting the response he wanted in return. Even though Katie promised his family he'd be getting a rose, Greg didn't think that was enough of a reason for him to stay. After the episode aired, some fans took to social media to express their concerns that Greg was gaslighting Katie during the break-up. Katie even got reflective on her Instagram, posting a photo that seemed to be about Greg amid the drama.

Kaitlyn, the season 11 lead of The Bachelorette, is the current co-host for this season, along with fellow former Bachelorette Tayshia Adams. After longtime host Chris Harrison's departure from the franchise, Kaitlyn and Tayshia took up the mantle. While Chris was a constant throughout every season of the long-running reality show, fans have also taken a liking to Kaitlyn and Tayshia. Having women host The Bachelorette adds a level of relatability for the lead that wasn't present with Chris. This is also important for when serious matters like gaslighting come up on the show.

In a recent podcast episode of Click Bait with Bachelor Nation, hosted by Tayshia, Joe Amabile and Natasha Parker, Kaitlyn joined as a guest and spoke about what went down between Greg and Katie. "I actually didn’t really fully know how that all went down until I watched it back. I was just hearing Katie’s side of the story, and she was actually really self-deprecating about it," Kaitlyn said. She also spoke about how she felt bad for Greg until she watched it back. Kaitlyn sympathized with Katie's struggle because she's been in her shoes before. "In that moment, [she] was so done. And to hear someone else be like, ‘I had that exact moment. I wanted to quit. I told everybody I was quitting. They didn’t show it, but I said all of those things that you were saying. And trust me when you get to the end, even if you don’t pick anyone, even if you pick someone, you’re gonna be like, whoa, that happened for a reason,'" Kaitlyn said.

Katie used social media to reflect on what happened with Greg, posting an Instagram Story about what gaslighting is and how to identify it. She also posted a photo of herself with the caption, "In darkness came the moon. Surrounded by glitter from above. The frogs and crickets sang. Rejoicing them and their love," written by her. This seemed to be a response to everything that happened with Greg during that episode. While Greg hasn't said anything publicly yet, fans were worried he could be on the show for the wrong reasons even before his exit, due to the fact that he went to acting school.

While Greg being an actor could mean he went on the show for fame, or that he's capable of lying about why he's there, there's no way to know what his side of the story is until he speaks up. Until then, it's a good thing that Kaitlyn and Tayshia are able to be there for Katie as hosts in a way that Chris probably wouldn't have been. Kaitlyn is able to relate to what Katie's going through by having experienced something similar herself, which is a step in the right direction for The Bachelorette franchise.

The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 8pm on ABC.
