LoL Fans Voice Disappointment At End to "Underwhelming" Sentinels Event

The Sentinels of Light League of Legends event concluded with a new cinematic entitled Absolution, and some fans have expressed their disappointment at how underwhelming the finale is. The Sentinels of Light event is the latest chapter in the Ruination storyline that began with the release of Viego, the Ruined King, back in January. Since then, League of Legends developer Riot Games has released bits of the storyline, including an important connection between new champions Gwen and Viego.

The Sentinels of Light event launched on July 8 and is set to officially conclude on August 10. The event introduced one of the game’s latest champions in Akshan, who is a fellow Sentinels of Light alongside Lucian, Senna, and others. It also brought along a new game mode called Ultimate Spellbook, as well as a new interactive story similar to the one featured in the Spirit Blossom event from last year. As usual, the event has added a number of Sentinels of Light skins to the game that tie into the plotline.

Following the release of League of Legends' Absolution cinematic, Reddit user YaraUwU shared their disappointment with it on the League of Legends subreddit, and more than a few members of the community echoed their sentiments. Many say they feel the video was just a cinematic version of the in-game event’s ending and failed to include a lot of elements that players expected to see, including characters that were supposedly important to the story like Thresh, Vex, and the Maiden of the Black Mist, among several others.

Several fans also felt that some of the scenes and elements for the Absolution cinematic were left out due to issues with update scheduling caused by the ongoing pandemic. The fact that the company’s Ruined King: A League of Legends Story turn-based RPG was delayed from its supposed release early this year can likely be considered one of the factors as to why fans felt that so many things were missing from the Sentinels of Light event and the Absolution cinematic. However, some are still holding onto hope that while the Sentinels of Light event has concluded, more content following up on the story might be released in the future.

Among the many MOBAs that are in the gaming market, League of Legends is one of the franchises that goes the furthest in its lore and worldbuilding. While Riot Games has generally been perceived as creating a worthwhile narrative, it seems that it may have dropped the ball in fans eye when it comes to this latest Ruination storyline. Hopefully, the studio is able to continue this League of Legends storyline in future events or release content that will fully flesh out its elements and bring proper closure to its characters and events further down the line.
