Who Killed Sara? season 1 ends with a shocking revelation and more unanswered questions. But the biggest question of all remains the same - who killed Sara? The final episodes of season 1 set the story up for the next season, which is already scheduled to premiere on May 19 on Netflix. In the season finale, the show continues to follow Alex Guzmán on his quest to take down the Lazcano family and discover who is responsible for the death of his sister, Sara.

Alex doesn’t find all the answers he’s looking for by the end of Who Killed Sara? season 1, but Rodolfo and Elisa Lazcano have become allies. Disowning their parents, they pledge their loyalty to Alex and promise to help him track down the truth, no matter where it might lead. Rounding out the team is Sara’s best friend, Marifer. But after seeing the tape of Flor being tortured, she claims to want no part in the search. But Alex has also received help from the mysterious, “Diana the Huntress,” who’s been anonymously bringing him clues about what really happened to Sara. While the online maven’s secret identity hasn't officially been revealed, the show strongly hints that Marifer is the one who's been messaging Alex. If Marifer is “Diana the Huntress,” this revelation leaves the audience with more questions than answers. Like how she knows so much about Sara’s death and why she lies about not wanting to be involved with finding Sara’s killer.

By the end of Who Killed Sara?'s final episode, “Two Graves,” the trio of amateur investigators, Alex, Elisa, and Rodolfo have discovered the truth about César Lazcano and his underground brothel at the casino, where he's forced illegal immigrants into sex work. They now believe that César is the most likely murder suspect. But in the last few moments of the season finale, Alex calls Elisa after discovering Sara’s hidden diary. Alex leaves a message telling Elisa that everything they thought they knew was wrong, implying that he’s discovered something in the diary that has changed his mind about Sara’s murder and who the killer might be. Who Killed Sara? combines classic telenovela techniques with a plot-twisting whodunnit, resulting in a dramatic story full of intrigue, and one that keeps you guessing until the bitter end. That’s why it’s no surprise that viewers of the new Netflix show still don’t know who killed Sara by the end of the first season. Ending in another cliffhanger, the show ultimately raises more questions than it answers as it sets up the story for Who Killed Sara? season 2.

Who Killed Sara? season 2 will need to address many unresolved plot points from the first season. What is clear at this point is that Mariana Lazcano wanted Sara dead. The final episodes reveal her plotting with Elroy to cut the parachute rope and ensure that Sara is the first one to use it. This leaves both Mariana and Elroy high on the suspect list at the close of season 1. But the true identity of the killer remains unknown. And here’s the twist - there is reason to believe that Sara could still be alive. By the end of the first season, viewers of the show have yet to see a body. Looking closely at her headstone, the year of Sara's death appears to have been deliberately blurred out, leaving room for viewers to question the true date of her death.

The Lazcano Patriarch, César, and Matriarch, Mariana are obsessed with their family image and preoccupied with their offspring serving as a way for them to preserve their identities, passing down a part of themselves to the next generation. This explains why Mariana is so threatened by Sara’s pregnancy. It also raises another point - César is the type of person who would likely do all that he could to protect his offspring regardless of who the mother might be. He’s clearly disappointed with how his two sons have turned out thus far, so given the opportunity to start over with another child, it seems likely that he would have done whatever he could to keep the baby alive. Based on this, it’s possible that Sara didn’t die the day of the accident.

Who Killed Sara? season 1 reveals César’s hidden lair in the basement of the casino where he’s held other women captive in the past. Knowing this, it’s easy to imagine that he may have kept Sara alive in secret - likely with the help of his fellow goon, Sergio - at least until she had her baby. If that’s the case, Sara could still be alive. Or she could have died after the accident. So the question remains - who killed Sara? More importantly, could she still be alive?

In the final episode of Who Killed Sara? season 1, Alex discovers a second diary hidden inside the wall of his house. Written at the top of the first page is Sara's name and a single sentence: “Very few of us are what we seem.” This takes the audience back to the very beginning, as the show opens with this quote from Agatha Christie’s The Man In The Mist - a story involving false perception and mistaken identities. Inside the diary, Sara's often incoherent writings, sketches, and drawings. Looking carefully at the pages, the diary reveals the author to be a troubled soul. The diary reveals that Sara may have been struggling with her mental health in the months leading up to her accident. In the diary, she repeatedly writes about needing help. And she’s clearly questioning her own sanity at times. At one point she writes, “What if I’m crazy like him?” The “him” she’s referring to is another unanswered question. It’s been confirmed that there are several new cast members joining the show in season 2, so it’s possible that this mystery man will be introduced into the story next season.

There's another hint about new characters in the diary. As Alex flips through the pages, he stops on a picture of a man who viewers haven't seen before. Beneath the photo is the word doctor. This could be the same doctor introduced in the season 2 preview following the final episode of Who Killed Sara? season 1. Giménez Cacho is set to star in Who Killed Sara? season 2, and the preview suggests he’s a psychiatrist who may have treated Sara before she died. It also looks like Sara may have spent some time at an inpatient mental health care facility before her death. The first season ends by setting up this new element of the story heading into season 2.

This is important as mental health is touched on in the first season, but the show hasn’t taken a deeper look into the story element yet, which could be a contributing factor into the mystery. Elisa is studying to become a neuropsychologist, which is a really interesting plot element that doesn’t get explored at all in season 1. She’s supposed to be going back to Madrid to get her master’s, but it is unclear if that’s still happening. Many characters in the show are also victims of physical and/or psychological abuse, and several are seen taking medication for unknown ailments which could have something to do with their mental health. Hopefully, that’s something they’ll be diving further into in Who Killed Sara? season 2.

Along with further setting up the story for season 2, the diary leads Alex to an unmarked grave. In the final moments of the last scene, Alex finds a map inside the diary that leads him to an unmarked grave. Digging it up, Alex finds the remains of a skeleton with a bullet hole in the middle of the unidentified victim's skull. The scene then cuts to what appears to be a flashback of Sara on the ground in the rain. Someone is on top of her, strangling her in the same spot where Alex is now digging. The identity of the strangler remains unknown. In the next cut, César is standing above someone in the rain with a gun pointed at them.

The title of the Who Killed Sara? season finale, “Two Graves” could be meant to offer viewers a clue about the story. If the body that Alex finds in those final moments of the season finale is indeed Sara’s, then “Two Graves” could be referring to Sara’s two gravesites. The one where her headstone is alongside her mother's, and her real burial place in the backyard of her childhood home. The way this new information is presented in the closing moments of the season finale certainly makes it seem as though César could have shot Sara and buried her in the backyard. This would also indicate that she didn’t actually die in the parasailing accident. If this is the case, it brings up another question; could Sara’s child still be alive? It's also possible that the scene of César with the gun is yet another red herring. A misdirect by the series creators, who have so far directed viewers towards certain conclusions in one scene only to later redirect them to a different conclusion in the next. At this point, anything is possible. Sara could still be alive, and César could have killed someone else. There’s nothing to prove that the body buried in Alex’s backyard is the same person César shot. All of this remains to be seen as the show heads into season 2.

Who Killed Sara? season 1 slowly reveals a different side of Sara from the person her family and closest friends thought they knew. But Sara’s not the only character who is hiding something. The first season was about everyone’s secrets, which should be explored further in season 2. Like Agatha Christie's quote says, nothing is as it seems - this is the main idea of Who Killed Sara? season 1.

All of the characters have their secrets. Alex and Elisa start their relationship by lying to each other about their true identities. For a long time, Chema keeps the fact that he's a homosexual hidden, and even after he comes out to his family, they often pretend that his relationship with his long-time partner, Lorenzo isn’t real. There are clues to suggest that Clara, the woman who agrees to be Lorenzo and Chema's surrogate, is secretly in love with Chema. Meanwhile, Lorenzo is secretly planning to leave and raise the baby in Atlanta away from Chema’s family. Rodolfo has a secret vasectomy after Sara’s accident but doesn’t tell anyone including his wife, Sofia, who is secretly having an affair with César. César keeps his affairs with both Sara and Sofia, among other women, a secret from his wife, Mariana, who has an ongoing secret relationship with their employee, Elroy. The characters are even hiding secrets from themselves - like Elisa's suppressed childhood memory of witnessing Flor's torture in the basement of the casino. These are just a few of the many secrets uncovered by the end of Who Killed Sara? season 1.

The secret nature and hidden part of each character's life is the central theme of Who Killed Sara? season 1. The show is about uncovering hidden truths. On the surface, discovering the truth about who killed Sara is the main point of the show, but as the story evolves and digs deeper into the different characters, their hidden pasts, family secrets, and true identities come to light. But just as the show seems to have the characters all figured out, something inevitably happens to change the way they see each other, how they see themselves, and the audience's perception of them. Who Killed Sara? season 1 makes a point to show how someone is always hiding something - there's always something left out, waiting to be discovered. As soon as the show answers one question, several more are immediately revealed, leaving a number of open-ended storylines by the end of the first season. With so many unanswered questions waiting to be addressed, there's plenty of drama left to unfold in Who Killed Sara? season 2.
