Bollywood: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 Now Cheaper, But It's Still Far From Cheap

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has received a fairly substantial price drop through the company's online store. Less than a year ago, Samsung launched the foldable smartphone as a sequel to the original Galaxy Fold from 2019. At the time, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 launched for $2,000, making it one of the more expensive smartphones available. Of course, the foldable smartphone segment has launched with similar price tags before, owing to its unconventional form factor.

Though it shares the same folding mechanism as the original Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 packs in more hardware than its predecessor. Besides unfolding to a large 7.6-inch AMOLED screen, the foldable phone sports a Snapdragon 865+ processor, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of internal storage. In terms of cameras, the rear camera setup packs in three 12-megapixel shooters, and the front-facing cover houses a 10-megapixel selfie shooter. While foldable phones present an interesting opportunity for users, the form factor hasn't really taken off yet, with some having left users wary about their durability, especially given their high price tags.

That said, Samsung has now slashed $200 of the cost of the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Instead of the original $2,000, the smartphone is now available to buy for $1,800, pending any other reductions in price through trade-ins and other promotions. For example, with an eligible trade-in, the price can go drop to as low as $1,200. In addition, current Samsung foldable owners can use the Samsung Members app to generate a referral code which, when passed to friends or family, will lower the price of another foldable by $100 while also providing the code owner with $100 in Samsung.com credit as well.

Unfortunately, a 10-percent reduction might not make the foldable phone worth its still-expensive price tag. As it stands, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is still more expensive than many of the top flagships today. The new Galaxy S21 Ultra, for example, starts at just $1,200. In fact, with $1,800, customers could buy both a Galaxy S21 ($800) and a Galaxy S21+ ($1,000). Further, consumers could even buy a fairly decent PC today for less than what Samsung's foldable smartphone costs. Based purely on the price, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 might not be the best purchase, other than for the most devout of smartphone fans.

Even then, Samsung fans might still want to hold off on buying the foldable phone. Some recent rumors have suggested the Galaxy Z Fold 3 could launch as early as June. While it remains to be seen if that will happen, considering the Galaxy Z Fold 2 launched in September of last year, the newer and presumably better model might be no more than six months away. Not to mention, Samsung is not the only foldable option to consider. Competitors are already developing their own takes on the foldable form factor and at a cheaper price than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2's current sale price.
