Isla Fisher Debunks Fan Theory Her Dad Inspired Borat's Look

Isla Fisher has debunked a recent fan theory that suggests her father was the inspiration behind the look of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat character. Fisher and Cohen have been married since 2010, four years after Cohen’s blockbuster Borat film arrived and made the English comedian an international star.

Despite the renewed popularity that the recent sequel, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, has brought the character, Borat has been a part of Cohen’s comedic repertoire since around 1996. At that time, Cohen was still a young struggling actor/comedian hosting British sketch series called F2F. The first early iterations of Borat came from this period, with Borat originally called Alexi Krickler. Through cameos alongside Cohen’s more popular Ali G character, Borat slowly but surely made an impact on audiences. But without a doubt, it was the Borat film that showed audiences around the world what Cohen could do with the character and how far he was willing to go to get a laugh. As a result, everything from the character’s accent to his fashion sense to his facial hair has become instantly synonymous with Kazakhstani reporter Borat Margaret Sagdiyev.

But not everyone believes that Borat came out of many years of trial and error. Some fans have recently taken to citing Fisher’s father as the prime source of inspiration for Borat’s look. Fisher inadvertently kicked off the fan theory recently after posting a photo of her dad to her Instagram account. While talking with E! Online, however, the 45-year-old actress and author made it clear that her father wasn’t actually the inspiration for Borat. Instead, he’s “just a very dapper gent expressing himself through a lot of facial hair.

"My father has also dabbled in many types of facial hair. He's grown a long beard, a short beard, you know, sideburns, no sideburns, handlebar mustache, pencil thin mustache. He's definitely rocked many looks over the ages. But you're right. In that photo, it does seem like it's a nod to that character. But no, he's just a very dapper gent expressing himself through a lot of facial hair."

As previously noted, it makes sense that Fisher’s father couldn’t be the inspiration behind Borat’s look. That being said, the resemblance between Borat and Fisher’s father is pretty impressive. So much so that if Cohen ever does go through with a Borat 3, Fisher’s father seems like the perfect person to play the beloved Kazakhstani reporter’s father. That might be highly unlikely to happen, but then again, so is a third Borat film. Perhaps this latest amount of attention could inspire Cohen to include more of Borat’s family in a new sequel. After all, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm definitely found success thanks in no small part to the inclusion of his on-screen daughter, Tutar.

Shortly after the release of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, many fans were left wondering what the future would or could hold for Borat. The idea of a third film in the franchise seems difficult to pull off, given how popular and renowned the character now is. But at the same time, the fact that Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was nominated for two Oscars could be enough for Cohen to change his mind about making another Borat film.
