Green Lantern: DC Teases Mystery of New Black Lantern

DC has teased the debut of a new Black Lantern as part of its Infinite Frontier publishing initiative. The Black Lanterns are one of the many antagonists for the Green Lantern Corps, and their return could spell doom for the Corps and the universe as a whole.

The Black Lanterns represent one aspect of the Emotional Spectrum, where different emotions are ascribed various colors - red for anger, blue for hope, yellow for fear, and so on. At opposite ends of the Spectrum are the White Lanterns, who represent life, and the Black Lanterns, who represent death. The Black Lantern Corps, led by the Nekron, invaded the Dc Comics universe during 2009’s Blackest Night, an event that saw many deceased DC heroes and villains return to life as Black Lanterns. Only the combined might of the various other Lantern Corps was able to turn them back. Now, with Infinite Frontier in full swing, the Black Lanterns are ready to make their return.

On Tuesday, writer Joshua Willaimson posted on Twitter the cover to Infinite Frontier #3. Illustrated by Mitch Gerards, the cover shows a hand reaching out to a Black Lantern ring, The hand is rotting away as it reaches out, with bones showing through deteriorating flesh. Written on the hand is “Who is the New Black Lantern?” Williamson offered no other information, only saying “The mystery of Infinite Frontier continues.” The image was quickly shared across social media.

The Black Lanterns, as well as the whole Emotional Spectrum, have been pushed aside in recent years, but since the beginning of Infinite Frontier, the Spectrum has made a resurgence. The Red Lanterns were namechecked in Green Lantern #1 and the Sinestro Corps appeared in that issue as well. The Black Lantern(s) returning to action keeps that trend going. The question is: beyond who will become the next Black Lantern and how they will become one, will Nekron make a return as well? He was banished at the end of Blackest Night, but he is immortal, meaning he could return. The Green Lanterns were gone in Future State—could the return of the Black Lanterns be tied to this? Another interesting possibility is that readers could see a new spin on the concept - Infinite Frontier has been about reinvention and rebirth, so seeing a new take on the Black Lanterns would not be much of a stretch.

Whatever the case, the Black Lanterns' return will shake the Green Lantern Corps, and the rest of the Spectrum, to their core and readers can see their reintroduction in Infinite Frontier #3, by writer Joshua Williamson and artist Xermanico later this year.
