Zack Snyder's Justice League: 5 Reasons It Should Continue In An HBO Max Series (& 5 Reasons It Shouldn't)
After four years of fan campaigning, the long-awaited Zack Snyder's Justice League director's cut is finally available on HBO Max, and fans across the world are expressing their love for the "Snyder Cut." However, the question remains as to whether the movie will lead to Justice League sequels or any further continuation of the "Snyderverse," as fans call it.
While WarnerMedia may be hesitant to continue the story of Zack Snyder's Justice League, there are ways that HBO Max might step in if the fan support is overwhelming enough, including the possibility of a Justice League streaming TV show. Should the Snyderverse continue in an HBO Max series or shouldn't it?
10 Should: A Chance To Tell Even More Story Than The Snyder Cut
While Zack Snyder's Justice League clocks in at a shocking four hours, which may be too long for many viewers, an HBO Max series has the chance to tell the story in a way that's much more palatable for most of the audience. It can delve deeper into the plot, have entire episodes devoted to action scenes, and expand the whole DCEU in ways fans may not expect. Judging entirely by the leaked Justice League 2 storyboards, Snyder's epic plans would struggle to fit into even two movies, so a series would suit the story he wants to tell perfectly.
9 Shouldn't: The Stars Might Not Come Back
The success of any future Justice League project depends not only on the return of Zack Snyder but also on the movie's stars agreeing to come back. This might be a problem for some of them, as it would be a significant downgrade from the world of movies. Henry Cavill has been back-and-forth between movies and streaming TV with The Witcher, as has Jason Momoa who recently appeared on Apple TV's See, but the likes of Ben Affleck might not want to commit to a TV show if it would mean taking them away from making movies.
8 Should: Zack Snyder Is Fine Working With Streaming Services
The key part of Zack Snyder's Justice League and any attempt to restore the so-called Snyderverse is, of course, director Zack Snyder himself. Consequently, any subsequent attempts to continue Justice League as an HBO Max series or exclusive movies would have to get Snyder back as a director.
Fortunately, it seems Snyder is amiable to directing features for streaming services as much as traditional studios, as since Justice League he's been working on this year's Army of the Dead with Dave Bautista for Netflix. If HBO Max asks him nicely he may well return for Justice League: The Series.
7 Shouldn't: The Budget Would Be Greatly Reduced
Game of Thrones was a phenomenon, a landmark in explosive fantasy storytelling, but its budget was still far lower than most movie blockbusters. Even with the increased cost of seasons as the show went on, the total budget was far lower than The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings movies. Even if Zack Snyder were to get Game of Thrones-level money from HBO Max, which seems incredibly unlikely, a Justice League show would still be operating on a far smaller budget than any normal superhero movie. Titans, for example, is a big-budget HBO Max show and even the highest estimates put it around $4.5 million an episode, whereas the original Justice League on its own cost $300 million, and that's before the Snyder Cut added more to it.
6 Should: Each Episode Can Focus On Different Characters
The biggest advantage a Justice League TV series can have over a straight movie is if it uses the episodic format wisely. As great as Zack Snyder's Justice League is, it's highly unlikely that any subsequent Justice League movies (if they were to happen) would be anywhere near four hours long, even as "Ultimate Editions." An HBO Max show doesn't just give Snyder the opportunity to tell a longer story, he can devote entire hour-long episodes to characters like Cyborg, Lois Lane, or even Darkseid if he should so choose.
5 Shouldn't: Any Series Should Be A Spin-Off
It's lovely to think of Justice League as a TV series, but that would be an expensive undertaking with no real benefit to a project with such a massive roster of central characters. DC has had the most success with single-hero live-action shows like The Flash and Arrow, and even its team-based series like Titans and Doom Patrol are origin stories, so not about the team being together already and facing threats. Indeed, the most benefit from movie-related shows seems to be gained with spin-offs such as Peacemaker and Gotham City PD rather than shows that just carry on the movie, which seem ready-built to disappoint thanks to the reduced budget and different feel.
4 Should: The Knightmare Timeline Will Get More Time To Breathe
The increased run-time of a Justice League HBO Max series would allow for a great number of storytelling opportunities, from episodes devoted entirely to specific characters to introducing characters a movie wouldn't have time for. However, it could also focus on the "Knightmare" future in multiple episodes, which could finally allow Snyder to really delve into what the long-teased apocalyptic timeline is all about.
It briefly appeared in both Batman V Superman and the Snyder Cut with multiple exciting ideas to explain but no time to do it. Fans would love to find out just how Batman and Joker ended up working together, or whether Batman escaped from Evil Superman's prison.
3 Shouldn't: The Snyderverse Is Too Divisive
Even the biggest fans of Zack Snyder's DC movies will admit that they aren't for everyone. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is often more family-friendly, Snyder's movies are generally darker and more serious. Despite the increase in action and humor in Zack Snyder's Justice League many of Snyder's detractors still aren't satisfied. With its own movies and TV shows, HBO Max may be looking to please the biggest possible audience, so may instead either go for lighter works like Peacemaker and The Flash or aim for non-Snyderverse comic book shows like Green Lantern Corps or Titans.
2 Should: The Fans Would Be Satisfied With A Series
The one vital part of Zack Snyder's Justice League and the entire Snyder Cut movement has always been the fans. It was only with tremendous fan support that the director's original vision was able to be released on HBO Max, and it's only with the same level of support that Justice League 2 or the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse movement can succeed. While most fans would want a movie, a full Justice League TV series that continues Zack Snyder's story with the possibility for even more content is something no fan would object to.
1 Shouldn't: Justice League 2 Needs To Be A Movie
There's just no escaping the fundamental problem with an HBO Max Justice League TV show: it really needs to be a movie. Even the best superhero TV shows simply cannot create the expensive action sequences of a movie, or at least not to the same degree, as even the Disney-backed likes of WandaVision have action scenes that pale in comparison to the rest of the MCU. To suddenly go from the epic Zack Snyder's Justice League to something cool but obviously much cheaper would be jarring for even the most ardent fan. While an HBO Max series offers many opportunities, Justice League 2 can only really happen as a movie.
