James Gunn Roasts Ted Cruz For Mispronouncing Thanos’ Name

Senator Ted Cruz recently brought up Thanos, the MCU's biggest antagonist to date, leading to Guardians of The Galaxy director James Gunn roasting Cruz for mispronouncing the name and not "making sense." Thanos (Josh Brolin) is a powerful titan who believes it is his duty to go from world to world in order to kill off half of the population as a way to save them from scarcity. Initially, he and his army would go to a planet and murder people themselves. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos searches for the Infinity stones instead, which can give him the power to simply snap half of the world's population out of existence. Again, Thanos speaks of his murderous mission as a necessary endeavor, claiming that he is saving the universe from suffering.

Cruz, a Republican congressman who represents Texas, referenced Thanos recently and incorrectly called him a "rabid environmentalist." Cruz brought up both the MCU villain and the HBO miniseries Watchmen, complaining that both are instances of the Left saying that "people are a disease." Since then, many have criticized Cruz, including Watchmen writer and producer Lila Byock. Cruz received such a reaction not only for having a contentious political take, but also because he failed to properly understand the message behind the superhero stories that he referenced.

Gunn, the director who has helmed the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, has also weighed in. He started by pointing out that Cruz pronounced Thanos' name wrong and saying that Cruz can "work his way up to making sense." Gunn also gave an explanation as to why Thanos is the opposite of an environmentalist.

Besides Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Gunn is likely the director for Marvel Studios that would understand Thanos' character the most. Although the last two Avengers films were the ones that properly saw Thanos as a character, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 & 2 were essential to setting up the villain's story. Not only did he direct the movie that had Brolin's first cameo as Thanos, he also established the titan as a looming threat through Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Thanos' adopted daughter who eventually betrays him (in two different timelines) and works to defeat him. Seeing as Gunn had a part in creating the character, he undoubtedly knows a lot about Thanos' motivations and beliefs – certainly more than Cruz does.

It is unsurprising that Gunn would join this discussion after Cruz's fumbled reference. Gunn is very active on social media and very outspoken about his political views. Furthermore, Cruz is a highly polarizing politician who has gotten into Twitter arguments with people from Hollywood before. A few weeks ago, Cruz had a Twitter feud with famous comedic actor Seth Rogen.

Right now, Gunn is in full swing working on three different movies and a TV series. DC's The Suicide Squad just finished filming, which will lead into the spinoff Peacemaker for HBO. He is also directing the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which recently began filming. Lastly, Gunn is consulting with the Thor: Love and Thunder team on how they can use the Guardians of the Galaxy characters in the film.
