Bollywood: DC Just Brought Back Their Strangest Character Ever

DC Comics has brought back their strangest character Ambush Bug for a whole new era. The unlikely. insect-themed hero will play an important part in the publisher’s next chapter, taking place on the publisher's digital comics library, DC Universe Infinite, which officially launched last month.

Recently, DC announced plans to turn the streaming service DC Universe into a comics library, as their movie and TV content has shifted to HBO Max. Now, the platform has been renamed DC Universe Infinite and has a selection of over 25,000 comics at the price of $7.99 a month or $74.99 for an entire year. In another unexpected development, the obscure teleporting superhero Ambush Bug, who was initially introduced in Crisis on Infinite Earths and has shown up intermittently over the years, will play a relatively big part in this redefining phase.

Ambush Bug is returning for a new digital comic series premiering exclusively on DC Universe Infinite titled “Let Them Live!” It will feature him as a fourth-wall-breaking guide through previously unpublished stories from the DC archives. Unlike traditional superheroes, Ambush Bug has always been fully aware that he exists inside a comic book universe. Working as a night janitor at the DC Comics offices, Ambush Bug, AKA Irwin Schwab, will introduce each one-shot adventure in new framing sequences written by screenwriter Elliott Kalan (Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return, The Daily Show).

The bizarre and unconventional superhero will essentially be the face of DC’s new digital content, as he presents readers stories featuring Harley Quinn, the Suicide Squad, Batman, and Nightwing. Issues will also be written by Jim Zub (Rick and Morty Vs. Dungeons & Dragons) with art by Tradd Moore (Silver Surfer: Black, Luther Strode), Marissa Louise (Spell on Wheels), and Mike Norton (The Goon). Ambush Bug’s knowing that he is in a comic book rivals the self-awareness of Deadpool, as he breaks into a literal vault containing classified issues. His quirkiness offers something completely unique to DC’s brand, making him the perfect narrator.

Although he’s often been underutilized, despite his membership in teams such as Doom Patrol and the Justice League of America over the years, his role in Let Them Live! could signal the beginning of more appearances down the line. The incorporation of such a lesser-known character at the forefront of the series seems to imply that content exclusive to DC Universe Infinite might continue the trend. Relatively unknown heroes and villains alike such as Ambush Bug will now have a place to go when mainstream titles focus on a more recognizable roster of heroes. The first issue of Let Them Live is available now on DC Universe Infinite and will later be released to other digital comics platforms such as ComiXology after 30 days.
