Supernatural: 5 Funniest (& 5 Scariest) Episodes Of Season 4
Supernatural is one of the few shows on TV that can leave fans both frozen in fear and trembling with giggles. The series is known for the unique way in which it combines terrifying moments with its unique brand of silly humor.
The fourth season of Supernatural introduced the angels, Castiel, and had an intriguing overarching storyline that had fans glued to their seats. Therefore, it is not surprising that it is often seen as one of the show's best seasons. Notably, the season also had some of the show's funniest and scariest episodes.
10 Funniest: Wishful Thinking
Easily one of Supernatural's strangest episodes, "Wishful Thinking" saw the Winchesters investigating a small town where everybody's wishes turned into reality. However, like with all things that are too good to be true, the wishes soon started to turn sour.
The episode was fun, wacky, and had the unique brand of Supernatural weirdness that offered some much-needed levity from the seriousness of the fourth season. The episode also saw Sam and Dean pretend to be Teddy Bear doctors as they tried to help a giant talking Teddy Bear who was questioning the very meaning of his existence.
9 Scariest: Jump The Shark
Supernatural has always been a show about family. The episode "Jump The Shark" completely changed what Sam and Dean thought of their family, as they found out that John had another child called Adam who he had raised far away from the hunter life.
The episode, at first, took on a soap-opera-like quality, but it soon turned into a dark mystery when it was revealed that Adam's likeness had been taken over by a vengeful ghoul. Between the discovery of Adam's death and Sam's intense torture scene, this episode was definitely one of the show's scariest.
8 Funniest: It's A Terrible Life
Every fan knows Supernatural as the show about the brothers who hunt the things that go bump in the night. Well, "It's A Terrible Life", asked the question, "what if it wasn't?" This episode saw Sam and Dean living normal but separate lives. Dean was a healthy eating, Prius driving, corporate stiff, while Sam was an average tech support guy.
The two eventually realized that something paranormal was happening at their workplace and teamed up to take it down. The episode cleverly changed parts of Dean and Sam's personalities to make them a little more ridiculous and fun in comparison to their hunter selves. Fans also got to see a hilarious moment where the two learned about hunting from none other than the Ghostfacers.
7 Scariest: On The Head Of A Pin
For most of season four, Dean had to deal with the consequences of his time in Hell. This all came to a head in the episode, "On The Head Of a Pin." Here Dean was tasked with torturing the demon Alastair in order to find information about some murdered angels.
Alastair was a formidable and unnerving character and his gruesome description of Dean's time in Hell left many viewers horrified. Yet, the most terrifying parts of the episode were the revelations that Dean had broken the first seal, Sam had been drinking Ruby's blood and the Uriel had been betraying heaven in order to free Lucifer.
6 Funniest: Monster Movie
The episode "Monster Movie" showed fans just how really weird Supernatural could be. Following the brothers as they investigated a range of murders at Oktoberfest, the episode paid tribute to the old Hollywood monster movie classics.
Filmed completely in black and white, the boys encountered everything from a Bela Lugosi type Dracula to a bandage wrapped mummy, who surprisingly turned out to be a shapeshifter with a penchant for theatrics. The episode was full of cringey dialogue, visual gags, and cheap costumes, which made it one of the funniest and silliest episodes of the show.
5 Scariest: Metamorphosis
"Metamorphosis" is perhaps one of the most tragic episodes of the entire series. The episode followed a man named Jack Montgomery who was turning into a Rugaru, a horrifying flesh-eating monster. Jack had no idea that he was the child of a Rugaru and unfortunately, Sam and Dean could not save him and he had to be killed, as he could not control his urges.
Gruesome, horrific, yet also pitiful, the episode remarked on the terrifying idea that people can sometimes not escape their destinies and this was further reflected in Sam, who it seemed was destined to make use of his demonic powers.
4 Funniest: Yellow Fever
"Yellow Fever" had the right mix of humor, heart, and horror that easily made it one of the show's most memorable episodes. In this episode, the brothers battled fear itself as Dean was infected by "Ghost sickness."
Fans got to see a new side of the normally stoic and brave Dean Winchester as he slowly became entertainingly more and more frightened by almost everything he saw. The episode also has a hilarious monologue where Dean has a hissy fit about the absurdity of their lives.
3 Scariest: Lucifer Rising
Supernatural's season finales have always had fans glued to their seats and "Lucifer Rising" is definitely one of the show's most shocking, as it finally revealed the truth about the Apocalypse. In the episode, Dean found out that the top tier angels never wanted to stop the Apocalypse and that Sam was the key to starting it.
Devastatingly, Dean couldn't get to Sam in time and he broke the final seal by killing Lilith. The whole episode had fans' hearts racing, from the very first scene where Azazel slaughtered a group of nun, to the last where Sam finally set Lucifer free. It's no wonder that it is one of the season's most terrifying episodes.
2 Funniest: The Monster At The End Of The Book
Supernatural is well-known for being one of the most meta shows on TV and it all started with the iconic episode, "The Monster at The End of The Book." Here, the Winchester's found out that their lives as hunters had made their way into a series of books written by then assumed prophet of the Lord, Chuck Shurley.
Although the episode was a lot more serious than many of the other funnier episodes on the list, the absurdity of the situation, Chuck's silliness, and the look at fan culture, definitely made it one of the show's more ridiculous episodes.
1 Scariest: Family Remains
Over the show's 15 years, Supernatural has had every type of monster that fans could think of. Yet, the most petrifying entities on the show were often not monsters, but humans. The episode "Family Remains" saw the brothers investigating a potential haunting, which turned out to be a pair of feral children living in between the walls.
Tragically, the children were the product of incest and were left to rot by their father, which caused them to become wild cold-blooded killers. This episode is perhaps the show's most horrific and complex, as viewers were left feeling terrified but also heartbroken for the children as they didn't deserve to end up the way they did.
