Nintendo Will Show Paper Mario Gameplay, New WayForward Game July 10

A Nintendo Treehouse Live presentation on Friday will show new gameplay from Paper Mario: The Origami King and reveal a new game in an existing franchise from developer WayForward. In 2019, WayForward released River City Girls, a revival of the classic NES game River City Ransom.

Since the end of June, rumors of a Nintendo Direct presentation for some time in July have been circulating. A Pokémon fansite webmaster with a history of accurate Nintendo leaks predicted the July event, later narrowing the expected date to July 20th. The rumored event is expected to be a full Direct presentation announced ahead of time, so if the rumor is correct, it looks like Nintendo will be hosting two livestream reveal events this month.

While the leaked Nintendo Direct remains a rumor, the Nintendo Treehouse Live show is definitely happening. Nintendo announced the presentation Thursday evening the day before the event, which is set to air at 10 am PT on Friday, July 10th. The livestream will show off gameplay from Paper Mario: The Origami King, Nintendo’s new RPG set to release on July 17th. The Origami King is the continuation of the long-running Paper Mario series, which started with two beloved games but has since been divisive among fans as it changed the formula that players loved some much from the original titles. Paper Mario: The Origami King isn’t the return to the series’ roots that some players were hoping for, but its new battle system may make it a hit nonetheless.

The second part of Nintendo’s announcement is a lot more mysterious, but no less exciting. The Treehouse Live presentation will also feature gameplay for a never-before-seen title “in a franchise new to developer WayForward,” in Nintendo’s words. There’s no hint of what that franchise could be, but Nintendo did point out what it isn’t, clarifying that the franchise is from a third-party developer rather than Nintendo. Given WayForward’s track record with games like River City Girls, Ducktales Remastered, and the Shantae series, there’s a solid chance that its next game will be another stylish 2D action game, no matter what franchise it’s part of.

It may not be the full Nintendo Direct that fans are waiting for, but Friday’s Treehouse Live is still plenty of reason to get excited. Paper Mario: The Origami King could still shape up to be a revival of the series or another disappointment, and WayForward’s previous games make whatever it has planned next worth a look.
