Bollywood: Star Wars: Taika Waititi Pokes Fun At Himself For Denying Movie Rumors

New Star Wars director Taika Waititi pokes fun at himself online for previously denying rumors about his involvement with the franchise. Earlier today, on Star Wars Day, Lucasfilm announced that Waititi has been hired to direct the next film in the franchise. He'll also co-write it with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917). A release date hasn't been given, but this is still the biggest news pertaining to the future of the Star Wars films to arrive in a long time. Waititi previously made his mark on the Star Wars universe through the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, where he played the droid IG-11 and directed the finale.

Earlier this year, rumors swirled saying Waititi had been approached about developing a Star Wars movie. Seeing as Disney owns both Lucasfilm and Marvel (where Waititi became a household name after directing Thor: Ragnarok), this didn't seem like it was out of the realm of possibility. However, a month later, Waititi brushed those rumors aside. Fans seemed to drop the idea for the time being, until today brought everything out into the open.

Now that his Star Wars job has been made official, Waititi hopped onto social media to poke fun at how he previously shut down those rumors. It seems like Lucasfilm was waiting to announce the news, and Waititi deflected to keep it a secret. As Waititi said himself, "Guess it wasn't a rumour after all. Psyyyych!"

Waititi is fresh off his Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay for his WWII satire Jojo Rabbit. Next, he'll turn his attention back to the Marvel universe for 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder. While his Star Wars movie remains without a date, it will likely come after Love and Thunder, which was already delayed from 2021. Clearly, Waititi has a busy few years ahead of him, though it does make one wonder what this means for his Akira movie.

Waititi's hiring has been met with positive responses from fans, especially those who grew disenfranchised with the most recent Star Wars films. Waititi is best known for reviving the Thor franchise with Ragnarok, and many are likely hoping he'll do the same for the galaxy far, far away. His work on The Mandalorian has further endeared himself to fans. It's safe to say that expectations are high, which often happens when it comes to Star Wars. At the very least, Waititi's film can breathe new life into the franchise and hopefully try something new. After all, now that the Skywalker saga is over, Star Wars needs to reinvent itself in a major way.
