Reports of Multiple Dead As Extratropical Cyclone Talas Lashes Japan

Extratropical cyclone Talas lashed parts of Japan, killing three and leaving tens of thousands of households without power on Saturday, September 24, local media reported. Shizuoka city was hit especially hard, with a record 419.5 mm (16.51 inches) of rainfall recorded since Thursday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Three people were killed in landslides caused by the rain, and one person was missing, Your Shizuoka Newspaper said, citing local officials. Power was also cut to 115,550 households as of Saturday afternoon, energy supplier Chubu Electric Power Grid said, after a landslide knocked over two electricity towers. This footage shows flooded roads in Shizuoka city, as flashes of lightning are seen in the distance. The JMA said heavy rain was expected to continue through to Sunday for central and western parts of Japan. Credit: @sternecoffeelab via Storyful
