The 8 Best Things About Death Stranding: Director's Cut

The genre-defying game by Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding, is getting a highly anticipated Director’s Cut version that has some impressive new features. From better traversal to new music, there are a lot of improvements players can look forward to.

Sam Porter Bridges’ journey across the United Cities of America will be an even more rewarding experience thanks to exciting multiplayer modes and cool new gear. There will be more opportunities to interact with other players and fascinating ways to explore the world. With the game set to release on September 24, players don’t have to wait much longer to see these new features in action.

8 The Fragile Circuit

One of the biggest and most surprising additions to Death Stranding will be a full racetrack, where players can compete against other users from around the world. Based on its appearance in the Gamescom trailer, the brand new Fragile Circuit looks like it will have several tracks and vehicles for players to choose from.

Vehicles like the Reverse Trike and Sam’s truck will be available for racers, along with a notable new ride in the form of a red racecar called the Roadster. While it’s not likely going to join the ranks of the best racing games ever made, it’s still a cool feature that gives fans a new way to interact with other users.

7 Better Combat

It’s no secret that Death Stranding’s combat system is not the best since it’s not the main focus of the game, but it seems like the Director’s Cut will address some of the criticisms around the mechanics that left players unsatisfied.

Sam will have new melee attacks and finishers, like dropkicks, as well as new weapons, like a mounted machine gun. There’s even a new combat training mode where players can hone their skills and practice with their chosen gear before heading out into the world.

6 Additional Delivery Missions

The protagonist’s delivery missions are a crucial part of the game that helps players learn more about the lore and test their skills. These quests are (in large part) responsible for making Death Stranding one of the best post-apocalyptic video games around, which is why it makes sense that there will be more of them in the Director’s Cut.

Based on their short appearance in the trailer, some of these quests will introduce new indoor environments and a bigger emphasis on stealth. While it’s not clear how much the new quests will expand on the main narrative, it does seem like they will be unlike what players saw in the original game.

5 A Buddy Bot

Delivering several packages can be tedious for Sam, which is why he often relies on his autonomous companion, the trusty Delivery Bot. This tiny robot can carry a surprisingly large number of packages for players. The Director’s Cut is taking this concept one step further by introducing the adorably named Buddy Bot.

It’s exactly what it sounds like – a reliable sidekick that will help Sam carry more items at any given time. What’s more, the Buddy Bot can carry the protagonist through rough terrain, making traversal much easier and a lot more fun.

4 New Music

Players who enjoyed the music in the original game will be excited to hear that Death Stranding’s relaxing soundtrack is getting its own upgrade, too. With its musical score receiving praise in the original game, the Director’s Cut will unsurprisingly improve upon the atmospheric and moving music in the game.

There will be eight new tracks for players to listen to as they explore the new features in the game. With artists like Apocalyptica and Woodkid contributing songs to the dystopian title, fans will definitely find themselves turning up the volume to hear the new and original compositions.

3 More Graphics Modes

Players have come to expect visually stunning graphics from any game that Hideo Kojima develops and it’s no different with Death Stranding. Fans of the game will be glad to know that they’re improving the already incredible visuals by adding more graphics modes for players to choose from.

The Director’s Cut will improve upon the performance mode with an impressive 4k resolution at 60 frames per second. There’s also a mode that can run at 4k, but with lower frame rates, with both options supporting HDR.

2 Improved Traversal

Traversal is arguably one of the most important features of the game, which is likely why it’s getting some major improvements in the Director’s Cut. There will be new stabilizers like the jetpack-like tool featured in the trailer, which helps soften landings with its thrusters.

There are also new ways to speed up deliveries, as aside from the Buddy Bot, the developers have added an interesting cargo catapult. Players can simply load up their heavy packages and fling them past the rough terrain, making it easier to avoid some of the more challenging locations.

1 PS5-Specific Improvements

Aside from improved visuals, fans can also expect to be more immersed in Sam’s adventures because the game will maximize the PlayStation 5’s capabilities. For one, the Director’s Cut will make us of the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, making every new terrain more thrilling to explore.

Of course, there’s also full 3D audio support that will make the sound effects and musical score much easier to appreciate. Finally, the PS5’s SSD will support faster loading times that will surely improve the gaming experience for its users.
