Oxygen Not Included: Ranching Dreckos (Tips, Tricks, & Strategies)

Ranching dreckos and glossy dreckos is a cost-effective way to produce reed fiber and plastic in Oxygen Not Included. Dreckos are docile, constantly mobile critters. They appear on all asteroid types except Rime. Players can use the printing pod to print dreckos or drecklet eggs, given the option. These critters are enormously useful in producing two versatile and necessary resources.

In Oxygen Not Included, dreckos are able to climb surfaces vertically, and even upside down. This makes them a bit difficult to wrangle if they find their way to a high point, but they never stay in one place for too long. These cute critters have very particular needs, and ranching them takes some time and planning, but the reward is well worth the effort.

There are two varieties of dreckos in Oxygen Not Included; standard dreckos and glossy dreckos. In order to breed glossy dreckos, players must first domesticate standard dreckos and supply them with a diet of mealwood. Both varieties of drecko eat live plants rather than harvested resources or plant materials. Standard dreckos can subsist off mealwood, pincha pepperplant, and balm lily, while glossy dreckos eat bristle blossoms or mealwood. Mealwood is perhaps the most plentiful plant in Oxygen Not Included, and dupes prefer not to eat food made from it. This makes mealwood an excellent food source for both varieties of drecko. Players should plant two mealwood plants per drecko. They should also still harvest these plants regularly since a drecko will not eat a fully-grown plant.

Dreckos need to be submerged in hydrogen, but their diet is composed of mealwood, which will not grow in hydrogen. The simple solution is to fill a chamber with hydrogen at the top and a layer of oxygen at the bottom. This not only leaves space for the mealwood plants to grow, but it can also provide a breathable atmosphere for dupes to move through in order to groom and shear dreckos.

In Oxygen Not Included, standard domesticated dreckos can be shorn at the shearing station for two units of reed fiber each, which regrows at a rate of 13% per cycle while they are submerged in hydrogen. The scales of glossy dreckos can be shorn for 150 kg of plastic, and they regrow at a rate of 33% while they are submerged in hydrogen.

Standard dreckos in Oxygen Not Included excrete phosphorite at 10 kg per cycle, while glossy dreckos excrete phosphorite at 9 kg per cycle. Pincha pepperplants require one kilogram of phosphorite per cycle, and they grow in hydrogen. This means that creating an adjoining pincha pepperplant farm above the drecko stable when building a base in Oxygen Not Included can be advantageous. It will conserve hydrogen while giving the dreckos a useful space to move through. Pincha peppers like the heat a lot more than dreckos do, however, so it is advisable to use tempshift plates to regulate the temperature between the two spaces.
