Big Brother: Claire Rehfuss's Coin of Destiny Decision Explained

As part of Big Brother 23's High Roller's Room twist, houseguest Claire Rehfuss won the coveted Coin of Destiny power, and it's time to explain her choices after her victory. The power grants the user the ability to anonymously overthrow the Head of Household and change the nominations. Several houseguests had accumulated enough BB Bucks to play for the opportunity to win the power. However, only Claire and Derek "Big D" Frazier ended up competing. Big D threw the competition, so Claire won the Coin of Destiny.

Claire decided not to change Head of Household Tiffany Mitchell's nominations with the power. She still overthrew Tiffany's HOH, but she re-nominated Tiffany's initial nominees, Kyland Young and Sarah Beth Steagall. Xavier Prather remains on the block as a third nominee because of a twist in the Power of Veto competition from last week.

Claire's decision to not alter the nominations is primarily due to her relationship with Tiffany. She believes Tiffany to be her strongest ally in the house and is oblivious to Big Brother's Tiffany's loyalty to the Cookout alliance. The group consists of Tiffany, Xavier, Kyland, and Big D, as well as Hannah Chaddha and Azah Awasum. The Cookout is targeting Sarah Beth for eviction this week, and Tiffany is especially adamant that Sarah Beth leaves. By keeping the nominations the same, Claire believes that she is honoring Tiffany's wishes and protecting her HOH reign.

On the live feeds, Claire even acknowledged that Sarah Beth leaving is not ideal for her, but that she wants to stay loyal to Tiffany. "Do I think SB is the best person to leave this week? No, but will I do it for my girl Tiff? Yes, absolutely," Claire said. She had the opportunity to target the biggest threats to her game this week, but Claire does not know that BB's Tiffany and the rest of the Cookout are planning to evict her at the final seven. She is instead playing the game under the assumption that she and Tiffany will make a deep run together. See a Big Brother Daily tweet below:

Claire's decision not to use the Coin of Destiny to target a member of the Cookout could be the point of no return for her game. If she is evicted before the Cookout reaches the final six, she will likely regret not making a move when she had such a strong power. Unfortunately, she is not privy to the true dynamics of the house, so it was unlikely she would ever have used the power to target a member of the Cookout.

It is impressive how dominant the Cookout has been while remaining undetected by the rest of the house. The fact that a Big Brother superfan like Claire has been unable to sniff out the alliance and act in her own self-interest is testament to the alliance's stranglehold on the game. Hopefully, if the alliance does make it to the final six, the endgame will be less straightforward than the jury phase has been so far. as the members of the alliance are forced to turn on one another.
