Nintendo is pulling back the curtain on Metroid Dread and revealing new details on the many areas Samus Aran will be exploring in her latest adventure. Fans were pleasantly surprised when Metroid Dread was revealed during June’s Nintendo Direct E3 2021 livestream showcase, as the upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive is the first proper 2D Metroid game in nearly two decades.
Details about Metroid Dread have seen been coming forward at a steady pace as Nintendo builds up to its planned launch next month. Set after the events of Metroid Fusion and planned as far back as the days of the Nintendo 3DS, Dread pits Samus against a mysterious member of the birdlike Chozo race and an army of E.M.M.I. robots on the dangerous planet of ZDR. Naturally, Samus will have all of her usual weapons and skills in Metroid Dread, along with a host of brand-new abilities. Even better, the notoriously strict Adam Malkovich won't restrict when she's allowed to use them as he did in 2010's divisive Metroid Other M.
Samus is going to need all the tools and abilities she can get, as Nintendo just posted a wealth of details about the locations and enemies awaiting her in Metroid Dread. Planet ZDR is home to several unique environments, including the magma-filled Artaria caverns, the Cataris power plant, the dark and robot-infested Dairon research lab, the underwater basement known as Burenia, an underground forest area named Ghavoran, and the ancient ruins of Ferenia. Navigating these diverse landscapes won't be a walk in the park for Samus, as they are filled with countless new enemies including E.M.M.I. drones and alien creatures like the four-legged Klaida and eyeball-like Ply.
As Metroid Dread’s October 8 street date fast approaches, Nintendo is ramping up its efforts to promote the highly anticipated game - including an aggressive marketing campaign in its native Japan and new ads that sell Dread alongside the soon-to-be-released Nintendo Switch OLED model. Things haven’t always been smooth sailing though, as Metroid Dread’s planned Amiibo two-pack was recently delayed in the UK and Europe until November 5.
It looks like Metroid Dread will feature plenty of verity in terms of in-game environments and enemy types, with players having to navigate through underground terrains and aged ruins in addition to the expected derelict laboratories and abandoned power plants. For now, fans will continue awaiting their chance to explore the dangerous Planet ZDR as Samus when Metroid Dread finally launches.
Metroid Dread releases for the Nintendo Switch on October 8.
