Mandalorian S3 Will Include A New Mandalorian Civil War - Theory Explained

The Mandalorian season 3 could feature a different and brand new Mandalorian Civil War — one that would pit Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) against Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff). Over the years, clashes among the Mandalorians have been tackled by other Star Wars projects. Both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels have had their respective plotlines dealing with internal conflict. This time, however, it might be different, not to mention more fully fleshed out as it could be the primary narrative of The Mandalorian season 3.

Din's world expanded in The Mandalorian season 2. Carrying out his task to reunite Grogu with his people, he and the Foundling traveled across the galaxy in search of Jedi. Along the way, they met various foes and allies, including Bo-Katan and her clan who were in pursuit of Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito). A favorite from Star Wars animated series, this marked Bo-Katan's live-action debut and, considering where her story was left off, chances are that it'll continue moving forward. But while she's proven to be a reliable accomplice, her relationship with Din may be taking a bad turn.

In a series of twists, Din became the rightful owner of the Darksaber in The Mandalorian season 3 finale after he bested Moff Gideon in a battle. Knowing full-well what it meant to her and also, in an effort to repay Bo-Katan for her efforts in saving Baby Yoda, Mando simply offered it to her. But Bo-Katan refused the Darksaber, acknowledging that she must earn it fairly according to the rules – in a fight. With Grogu now departing with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) for his training, The Mandalorian season 3 will expectedly take a brand new overarching narrative, one that could revolve around this budding conflict. And Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni might be mining inspiration from a non-canon war between two groups of Mandalorians (h/t Inverse). In it, the issue arose with Jaster Mereel's True Mandalorians, who are staunch believers that the Mandalorian creed refers to their occupation more than their actual identity. They are convinced that the best way to honor the code is to be honorable mercenaries. This is opposed by the Death Watch, led by Tor Vizla, and their perspective that Mandalorians should be ruthless savages as they initially were.

Upon closer inspection, Din and Bo-Katan have similar ideological differences when it comes to their interpretation of what a real Mandalorian is, and it could play in the battle for the Darksaber. Aside from the aforementioned issue, there are also other discrepancies in their respective interpretation of the Mandalorian code. This was clear when they first met back in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 3 titled "The Heiress." Din was baffled by Bo-Katan removing her helmet and showing her face — something as a Foundling he previously believed to be against the creed. Meanwhile, Bo-Katan simply scoffed at this and countered the idea in an effort to establish her interpretation of the creed. Interestingly, she was also once a member of the Death Watch as seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, before she broke off and founded her own faction called the Nite Owls. As their story presumably continues to be intertwined moving forward, The Mandalorian can finally fully explore what it means to be a Mandalorian and perhaps even establish streamlined rules for this moving forward.

Admittedly, this potential story turn will be drastically different from what people are used to with regard to the Disney+ show. However, with Grogu out of the picture indefinitely, not to mention the current status of the Darksaber, it seems like an organic way to move The Mandalorian's narrative forward. After all, many presumed that a deep dive into Mandalorian culture would actually be the show's main premise when it began which hasn't yet been the case.
