Recently, Kim Kardashian of Keeping Up With the Kardashians fame graced the Met Gala in an all-black Balenciaga ensemble which covered her entire body, and it's time to talk about the unique outfit. Many KUWTK fans were quick to clock Kim’s look as akin to a “dementor” from Harry Potter. The look, with its stark silhouette, represents a fashion-forward moment and has obvious "masked era" relevance. However, the fact that Kim could likely transmit a virus through her head covering makes the potential protective element point moot, except when it comes to scaring off fictional wizards.
One of the most alluring aspects of the look was the fact that the prolific star could be recognized only from her distinctive silhouette. Most fans still preferred her half-sister Kendall Jenner’s more classic (and bejeweled) Givenchy Met Gala look. Designer Demna Gvasalia was Kim's date for the evening and wore a matching "covered" look.
While the look has haters and fans alike, the amount of talk surrounding it will certainly cement its place in history. Kim wrote on Instagram, “what’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!” Vogue claimed that the look "rewrote red carpet rules." Kim took the time to do a photoshoot against a black background before attending the Met Gala red carpet. Kendall took a dramatically different approach to her Met look, donning her glittering dress in reference to Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. The two sisters posed next to each other, never looking less related, although their contrasting heights and frames already differentiate them. The shot of the pair together has sparked endless memes.
The choice to wear the mysterious and minimalist design seems potentially influenced by Kanye West's desire for her to dress more conservatively. However, KUWTK fans have seen signs that Kim’s fashion has evolved in her post-divorce life. Kanye has dominated Kim’s fashion choices over the last half-decade. She's worn Kanye-inspired nudes, bike shorts, and sweats, and her ensembles have had a major influence on popular fashion. KUWTK viewers will forever remember Kanye overhauling Kim’s closet, much to Khloé Kardashian's dismay and concern. Kim then took to shading her sister’s non-Kanye-approved looks repeatedly, especially on their trip to Tokyo, Japan.
Other than both being uniquely provocative, Kim’s 2021 Met Gala look strikes a strong contrast to her 2019 look that pulled Thierry Mugler out of retirement. Kim's cinched and "dripping" look had fans and critics. Ultimately, it did not appear as provocative as the "dementor" look. Kanye had some choice words of criticism just before the 2019 event, sparking Kim’s anxiety. The exaggerated nipples, akin to the iconic Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, did not make an appearance at the Met after Kanye’s dislike of the overtly sexy Mugler gown.
The ultra-conservatism of the fully covered "dementor" outfit is a drastic change from Mugler’s earthy and sultry siren energy. Whether Keeping Up With the Kardashians fans ultimately loved it or hated it, Kim has effectively gotten people talking, as usual. Of course, that's just what the future Hulu reality queen wants.
