Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 Will Be Bigger, Says Co-Director

The second part of Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be bigger than its predecessor, exploring more of the world beyond Midgar’s borders in what could be an open-world format. Fans have already gotten a small sample of what’s to come with last month’s FF7 INTERmisson DLC, which put players in the role of the brave-yet-quirky ninja Yuffie as she tries to steal Shin-Ra’s “Ultimate Materia.”

Final Fantasy 7 Remake co-director Naoki Hamaguchi has previously promised that INTERmission would set up the story for the next proper FF7 Remake installment, with the team-up moves that Yuffie and fellow Wutai member Sonon perform being one of the things that could carry over. There were also several enticing nods toward the larger Final Fantasy 7 expanded universe, like a cameo appearance by Weiss and Nero from Dirge Of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, that Hamaguchi wants to explore in more detail as the FF7 Remake series goes on.

Meanwhile, the first installment of Final Fantasy 7 Remake kept Cloud and company largely confined to the city of Midgar itself, but Naoki Hamaguchi recently hinted that the next chapter will branch out in an interview with IGN. He stated that “next installment will involve Cloud and company to leave Midgar and explore the world," and that "our next challenge will be to create gameplay that leverages the vastness of the world.” Hamaguchi also noted that he and his team deliberately made FF7 Remake Part 1 in contrast to the rest of the series and that FF7 Remake Part 2 could feature an open world for Cloud and his friends to explore.

Hamaguchi’s statements do line up with how the story of the original Final Fantasy 7 played out, as the player’s party was greeted to a large overworld map after they escaped Midgar in the early part of the game - which was covered and expanded upon in the first Final Fantasy 7 Remake installment last April. FF7 Remake creative director Tetsuya Nomura has also commented that the next game will feature more varied environments for Cloud and the gang to roam through as they track down the villainous Sephiroth, specifically mentioning that they will walk through "lots of nature."

If Naoki Hamaguchi’s words are anything to go by, the next installment of Final Fantasy 7 Remake will indeed be a much bigger game than fans were expecting after the Midgar-focused first game. Given how much the last FF7 Remake title expanded upon the original Final Fantasy 7’s opening hours, one can only imagine how vast the world beyond Midgar’s walls will be when Part Two of Final Fantasy VII Remake finally arrives.
