Why Godzilla Always Knows When The Planet Is Being Threatened

Godzilla always seems to know when things are going wrong in the MonsterVerse. He was the first one on the scene when the MUTOs attacked in the 2014 movie, as well as when the eco-terrorists woke up Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and finally when APEX activated Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs Kong.

In Toho’s movies, Godzilla had a tendency to be in the vicinity whenever there were monster attacks in Japan. His proximity to danger was heightened to a new level when he was adapted to the MonsterVerse. Instead of staying in just one area, Godzilla’s travels through the Hollow Earth tunnels and in the ocean take him all over the planet. But despite having a much larger territory to protect in the MonsterVerse than he did in the Toho films, the King of the Monsters is rarely late when there’s a Titan threat – no matter where it happens to be. After dispatching his latest enemy, Godzilla returns to the ocean where he’ll remain until a new monster gives him another reason to emerge.

As noted in the 2014 film, Godzilla’s apparent sixth sense when it comes to Titan activity relates to bioacoustics. Godzilla knew the villainous MUTOs were about to cause trouble as a result of them sending signals to each other. It was explained in the movie that Godzilla was “listening”, and intercepted these signals. He recognized that they came from the MUTOs since his species has an existing history with them. An ancient Godzilla was killed by these creatures thousands of years ago.

That’s a bit similar to how he knew what was going on with Mechagodzilla, who was secretly connected to the Ghidorah head that survived King of the Monsters. Godzilla destroyed the APEX facility in Florida and made a bee-line for Hong Kong because he detected the frequency given off by his old foe. He knew that Ghidorah was being resurrected and that the organization was on the way to making their own Titan.

Other reasons Godzilla is always quick to respond to Titan disturbances include the time he spends in the ocean doing nothing but listening and the fact that he’s highly attuned to nature. This aspect of his character is explored rather deeply at the beginning of the Godzilla vs. Kong prequel graphic novel, Godzilla: Dominion. Based on what’s said in the comic, it’s now known that Godzilla bears such a strong connection to the Earth’s environment that he can feel it when things are off; just one of many abilities that Titans such as Mechagodzilla don't have. Having lived on the planet for thousands of years, he understands the Earth’s ecosystem better than anyone possibly could. The depths of the ocean, for example, are said to be “extensions” of him. A line in the book states that “his territory moves within him”. All things considered, it’s no wonder Godzilla is the planet’s champion, the one who defends it when the balance of nature is threatened.
