Starfield Release Date, Story, & Gameplay Details: Everything We Know

E3 2021's Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase kicked things off with a Starfield trailer and release date. The game is highly anticipated, Bethesda's first original IP franchise in 28 years. Initially announced at E3 2018, very little has been revealed about what to expect from Starfield - until now.

At the showcase, it was confirmed Starfield would be exclusive to PC and Xbox consoles, and would be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one. Starfield is being developed for the Xbox Series S|X, but at this time does not offer backwards compatibility for the Xbox One. Since the showcase, Bethesda has updated the game's official website and tweeted supplemental videos featuring Starfield's development.

In Starfield, players act as a member of Constellation, the last group of stellar explorers. The Starfield trailer shows off several spaces inside of a ship, including the mess hall, sleeping quarters and an incredibly detailed cockpit. Fans also got a glimpse of the sweeping landscapes of some of the planets the Starfield universe has to offer. The one most prominently featured looks like Earth's moon, but there's a lot more for players to explore. Here's everything we know about Bethesda's Starfield.

Most easily surmised is that Starfield is set in space. Every single shot in the trailer features a different planet, the interior or exterior of a spaceship, or someone in a spacesuit. Bethesda hasn't yet revealed the names of the various planets or settlements players can visit in Starfield, but for now it's enough to know the game is an open-world space RPG.

Not much has been revealed about Starfield's gameplay other than it's an open-world RPG. Players will have the opportunity to create their own characters and forge a path across the galaxy. Bethesda executive Todd Howard stated that Starfield is like "Skyrim in space," so it's easy to align The Elder Scrolls classes and assume Starfield will have options for player different player classes, perhaps focused on combat or tech. It's also likely the game will have a crafting system, a staple feature in Bethesda's open worlds.

As with the setting and gameplay, not much has been revealed about Starfield's lore. Close examination of the trailer gives some hints of the story to come, featuring flight manuals and machines for players to engage with. One scene shows a note written on glass, "Vasco, we're out of Tranquilitea. Do not get decaf!" There is clearly a detailed world that includes small details in addition to larger extraterrestrial dangers for players to learn about, and more will certainly be revealed as the game launch approaches.

Barring any delays, Starfield is slated to launch November 11, 2022.
