Third-person shooter Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is filled with fun little details and Easter Eggs for fans to uncover, and that includes a nod to one of the franchise’s pioneering developers. Insomniac is no stranger to inserting touching tributes in their games, having honored both Stan Lee and late Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman in Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Past Insomniac developer Dan Johnson is a more personal case though, as he worked on the original Ratchet & Clank and most of the series’ subsequent sequels until his death during the production of Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters in 2006. Both that installment and 2007’s Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction were dedicated to his memory, and Insomniac has hidden an in-game action figure in his likeness within most installments since – including this year’s Rift Apart.
According to GamesRadar, Reddit user BadBackground5778 uncovered the secret Dan Johnson action figure in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. In their posting on the RatchetAndClank subreddit, the figure can be found behind the bar in the Gastropup at Scarstu Debris Field, though any further context might be considered a spoiler. Johnson had first imported his own face in the original Ratchet And Clank, and this tradition has been maintained in every following game save for Ratchet: Deadlocked and Ratchet & Clank: Going Mobile.
So far, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has been hailed as one of the PlayStation 5's first true breakout exclusives, gaining high praise from critics and fans alike for its stunning graphical prowess and polished gameplay, as well as the addition of a new playable heroine Rivet alongside the colorful cast of characters fans have loved since the franchise’s beginning. The game’s great reception and impeccable quality are made all the sweeter by reports that Insomniac did not resort to crunching employees to get the project finished in time, unlike more controversial titles like CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077.
The Ratchet & Clank series owes part of its great success to the hard work of Dan Johnson, making the fact that Insomniac continues to honor his memory a good decade after his passing all the more touching. Fans can stay on the lookout for Johnson’s action figure within the technical marvel that is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which serves as a testament to how Insomniac values its dedicated workforce - a group of talented minds that have crafted some of the best PlayStation exclusives in recent memory.
