Matrix 4 Using Resurrections Title In Early Test Screenings

The Matrix 4 is using Resurrections as its title for early test screenings. Warner Bros. finally announced a fourth Matrix movie in 2019 after years of rabid fan speculation and rumors. The original trilogy’s Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett-Smith will return to reprise their original roles as Neo, Trinity, and Niobe, respectively. However, Laurence Fishburne’s iconic character Morpheus will reportedly not be returning. In addition, Matrix 4 marks the first time Lana Wachowski will be directing without her collaborator and sibling, Lily.

Matrix 4’s script is from Wachowski and two acclaimed novelists, David Mitchell (known for Cloud Atlas, which the Wachowskis adapted into a popular feature film) and Aleksander Hemon (The Lazarus Project). The long-awaited sequel will feature a plethora of newcomers in Christina Ricci, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, all of whom appear in currently undisclosed roles. While Warner Bros. has been diligent about keeping plot details under wraps, the title Matrix Resurrections was leaked early this year, and now it is becoming more likely this will be the film's actual title.

According to David Manning on Twitter, Matrix 4 is using Resurrections as its title for early test screenings. Even though invites to the screenings read “A New Matrix Movie," the official on-screen title was The Matrix Resurrections, appearing in the same style as the trilogy’s second and third installments, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Additionally, those who have seen the early test screenings call the film “weird, surprisingly funny, and ambitious to a fault.” Matrix 4 also draws early comparisons to Cloud Atlas, an ambitious and sprawling sci-fi film from Lana Wachowski, rather than her most recent sci-fi outing, Jupiter Ascending, praised for being aesthetically pleasing but panned for its plot and pacing.

Understandably, no plot details were revealed by way of these early screenings due to audience members having to sign non-disclosure agreements before seeing the film. While Warner Bros. has denied that Resurrections is the official title in the past, using it for early screenings is a strong indication that it will be released as such. With Matrix 4 scheduled to hit theaters and HBO Max in December of this year, it won’t be long until Resurrections is likely confirmed as the official title and the marketing campaign commences.
