Code 8 sequel, Code 8: Part II, has been acquired by Netflix. The sci-fi action film was a huge hit on Netflix upon its release in 2019. Written and directed by Jeff Chan, the film stars the Amell cousins, Robbie Amell (The Tomorrow People) and Stephen Amell (Arrow), who also executive produce. The film is a feature-length version of the 2016 short film of the same name set in a world where four percent of the population are born with superpower abilities. These superpowered humans face discrimination from the rest of society, forcing them to turn to a life of crime. One of those people is Conner Reed (Robbie Amell), who joins a group of criminals to pay for his ailing mother's medical treatment. The small-budget film was a surprise breakout hit for the streamer and sequel Code 8: Part II was announced earlier this month.
Netflix announced Monday that it has acquired the global rights to Code 8: Part II in a deal with XYZ films. From Collective Pictures, the sequel is set to film in Canada later this year and will stream globally on Netflix. Chan will return as director and co-writer, with the Amell's reprising their roles and executive producing once again. Additional casting for the sequel has not yet been announced. The official synopsis reads:
After witnessing the murder of her brother and subsequent cover up, a teenage girl with abnormal abilities seeks the help of an ex-con (Robbie Amell) and his former partner-in-crime (Stephen Amell). Together, they face a unit of corrupt police officers who deploy advanced robotic technology to prevent themselves from being exposed.
Along with the Amell cousins, the sequel will be produced by Chan and Chris Paré. Upon the first film's release and its subsequent success, the Amell cousins announced that they would reprise their roles in a Code 8 spinoff series for streaming service Quibi. However, the spinoff's fate was unknown after Quibi shut down in 2020.
Now, Code 8 fans will be happy to hear that the sci-fi story is officially continuing. Despite the Quibi series getting canceled, the franchise will live on through Netflix, which is good news as Code 8 left many questions unanswered at the end of the film. There is no official release date set for Code 8: Part II, but hopefully it won't be too long before it drops on Netflix.
