A new clip for the upcoming Marvel movie, Black Widow, reveals Red Room's brutal efforts to catch Nat in an epic rooftop chase sequence. The new superhero flick is the 24th film in the MCU and stars Scarlett Johansson as the titular character. Black Widow will release on July 9 simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ via an additional Premier Access cost (though that fee will be gone starting on October 6).
Johansson first appeared as the Marvel Comics character, Black Widow, in Iron Man 2 (2010). Since then, she has played the superhero in seven different films, becoming a central MCU character. Starting as a spy skilled in hand-to-hand combat, she eventually joined the counter-terrorism agency S.H.I.E.L.D. and quickly became a key member that would go on to lead the Avengers. Now, Johansson's Black Widow character will headline her own film of the same name.
In a tweet posted by The Tonight Show, Johansson reveals a new clip from Black Widow that showcases Red Room's strenuous efforts to catch Nat in an epic rooftop chase sequence. The clip features Johansson and MCU newcomer Florence Pugh, evading Red Room (a group of female assassins). ScarJo and Pugh race across Russian apartments and rooftops, sliding down sloped roofs, hanging onto the side of a chimney, and eventually crashing through a window. Originally scheduled to release in theaters back in May of 2020, Black Widow (like many other movies) was effectively pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic, which also delayed Marvel's Phase 4 plans to 2021. Development for another Black Widow film began in April of 2004 by Lionsgate; however, that project failed to move forward as the character's rights were reverted to Marvel Studios in June 2006. After Johansson first appeared as the female superhero, discussion for a solo flick started back up in 2017. Unfortunately, the new Marvel film has been delayed three times due to COVID-19, and it will be the first movie in Phase Four of the MCU.
Considering the wait for Black Widow, due to all the delays, it's no wonder that it's one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, which is made all the more real by the exciting chase sequence in the clip above. It's fast, action-packed, high energy, and full of excitement. Above all else, while Black Widow was hyper-sexualized in the early MCU films, she has evolved to become a fierce and formidable fighter ready to take on any challenge that falls in her way. That evolution is on full display in the rooftop chase sequence. If the clip above fully reflects what's in store for Johansson's character, then Black Widow is sure to be a thrilling ride.
