Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fastest Fighters Face Off In Tournament

The next online tournament in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will focus on the fastest fighters in the game. The most recent themed online tournament revolved around facial hair, and it featured characters with facial hair on the spirit board for an extended period of time. Some of the spirits involved were Wario-Man, Mario, and Solid Snake. It also included characters such as Broque Monsieur from the Mario & Luigi RPG spin-off series and Daruk from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Aside from online tournaments, Sephiroth, the main antagonist from the beloved JRPG Final Fantasy VII, was added to the game. He was added as a part of the game's second DLC pack, and three more fighters from it have yet to be revealed. This has led to plenty of conjecture surrounding who the three fighters may be, and it's unknown when they will all be announced.

As of now, though, players can participate in a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online tournament that focuses on the game's quickest characters, as reported by Nintendo Life. The tournament will start on January 22 and last for three days. The featured fighters include Sonic the Hedgehog, Captain Falcon, Fox McCloud, Little Mac, Sheik, and several others. Specifically, the 16 characters in the game with the top running speed will be playable. See the Twitter announcement below.

Themed online tournaments are always fun, and this one seems to be continuing that pattern. One can only imagine how chaotic these matches are going to be, as everyone will be exceptionally quick. Sonic the Hedgehog seems like an inevitably popular choice, as does Captain Falcon. Sonic vs. Sonic matches are invariably fun, and it seems like players will be able to get more of that with this upcoming tournament. As Sonic the Hedgehog himself would say, you gotta go fast.

However, because the top 16 quickest fighters are allowed to participate, some of these matches may be a bit on the slower side. To be transparent, there are very few fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that even compare to the swift speeds of Sonic, Captain Falcon, Sheik, Little Mac, or even Fox, for that matter. Hopefully, most of these matches center on the faster characters. Frankly, there's not much of a point in having a tournament that revolves around speed if most players choose characters with average speed. Regardless, this online tournament should still be a great time. Expect plenty of spin dashes.
