Skyrim has remained one of the most-played games in the world after 9 years and over three generations of consoles, and after all this time it is still kept alive by modders. Whether they are improving the performance, or adding silly things to make players giggle, they have kept fans coming back for more no matter how many hours players have seen vanish into the game. Now, only a few months after the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, fans can finally see Skyrim run at 60fps with the help of mods.
There have been many amazing mods for Skyrim over the years, making it look and feel better, and adding in all sorts of content; some mods have added enough content to rival an official DLC for the game. One developer, SureAI, made a mod that is basically its own game using the Skyrim engine. The developer has been keeping the Enderal mod up to date for four years, giving fans something more to play when their main Skyrim adventure is over. Of course modders don't only give to old games, but create mods for new games, growing them as fast as the game's community grows. Among Us, for example, has had a very fast growing community since the game became popular last year, and there are so many mods for the game that a launcher of sorts that comes pre-installed with several of the most popular mods and game modes has been created to make things easier on the players.
Creating a mod that allows Skyrim to run at 60fps seems to have just been a matter of getting rid of the 30fps cap that is hard-coded into the game. According to a YouTube video from Digital Foundry taking a look at this mod, the limit on the frame rate stays in place even when playing on a next-gen console via backwards compatibility. YouTuber Wrighton found a way around this cap through modding the PS4 version of Skyrim, allowing the game to run at 60fps on the PS5. The mod removes the 30fps cap, and makes adjustments to the physics to make sure that it all works fine at a higher frame rate. Players can download and install this mod through Skyrim on their consoles.
A couple of months ago a mod was released that also allowed Skyrim to run at 60fps on the Xbox Series X. Players can download this mod, created by smudgey5000, directly from the Bethesda website. It also unlocks the frame rate cap that limits the game to 30fps, and the game runs smoothly at 60fps on the next-gen console.
The work that modders put into improving games is admirable and appreciated, and Skyrim has never looked better running at 60fps in 4K. Even players who don't use mods because they prefer to earn trophies or achievements have been looked after by these creators, as the mods for both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X allow players to still earn their rewards to show off. Without continued support from the official game developer, modders have made sure to bring Skyrim into the next generation.
Skyrim is available on PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch.
