New Russell T Davies Doctor Who Special Coming In 2021

A new Doctor Who audio special from former showrunner Russell T Davies is on its way. Davies was responsible for reviving the long running sci-fi series from its hiatus back in 2005. As head writer and executive producer, he oversaw Doctor Who season one through four with both Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant as the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, respectively. During his time on the show, he also created two successful spinoffs, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Davies was a fan of Doctor Who long before his tenure on the show, dating all the way back to his own childhood. He has credited the series with inspiring him to become a writer and even submitted spec script of the series to the production team as far back as the mid-1980s. In December of 2020, he teased that spec script, titled "Mind of the Hodiac," on Twitter. Davies posted several pages from the decades-old story, which followed the Sixth Doctor, and suggested that the "story could still work." As it turns out, that suggestion has now become a reality.

On Monday, the writer announced that the "very first Doctor Who script [he] ever wrote" would be produced this year. Davies shared that his classic Who tale would become an audio adventure during an interview with BBC’s The One Show. Pulling out the script, he said:

"I reached into one of those boxes you have at home full of old papers and old bills, and I found this, which is a Doctor Who script I wrote in 1985 on an electric typewriter in a bedsit in Cardiff. And I think someone’s gonna make it. … My friend Scott Hancock’s gonna make an audio version of this with a company called Big Finish. So, that’ll be nice."

Big Finish, an audiobook company, has produced plenty of Doctor Who adventures already, with voice acting from stars of the series such as Tennant, Alex Kingston, and Billie Piper. Most recently, Eccleston recorded a number of new stories in his first return to the role since he left the series in 2005. Big Finish has also made plenty of classic Who stories, including ones featuring the talents of the Sixth Doctor himself, Colin Baker. With that in mind, fans can reasonably expect Baker to give voice to Davies' rediscovered treasure.

Although fans of Davies’s tenure on Doctor Who may have hoped his return to the series would be one of his own Doctors (or that it would be a television, rather than audio, event), this new special provides an exciting opportunity. Any time Davies returns to the Time Lord is welcome, but his take on one of the classic Doctors will demonstrate his love and fandom for the series perhaps more than ever before. Plus, though it’s classic Who, he also promised it would be a classic Davies adventure, with "great big cosmic events all focusing down on an ordinary Earth family." In other words, this special is sure to be a treat for fans of all eras of Doctor Who.
