Marvel's Moon Knight show hires Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, the directing duo behind The Endless and Synchronic, to direct several episodes. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is just about to launch Phase 4 and a new era of programming thanks to Disney+. The streaming service gives Marvel Studios an outlet for a different kind of long-form storytelling following familiar and new characters. While the MCU's Disney+ initiative starts with Scarlet Witch and Vision starring in WandaVision, one of the new heroes to get a show is Moon Knight.
The development of Moon Knight was announced in 2019 but it took over a year for Marvel to find an actor to play Marc Spector. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker star Oscar Isaac is staying in the Disney family to play one of Marvel's most fascinating heroes. Spector is a former mercenary who has dissociative identity disorder and believes the Egyptian moon god Khonshu embued him with superpowers. Once Isaac joined Moon Knight, the rest of the show's pieces began to fall into place, and that is now continuing.
According to THR, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will direct multiple episodes of Moon Knight. Mohamed Diab is the showrunner and will direct a "sizeable chunk" of the series, with Benson and Moorhead brought aboard to direct several episodes. Benson and Moorhead are best known for directing the 2018 fantasy horror film The Endless, which is currently streaming on Netflix. Their most recent film, Synchronic, stars MCU alum Anthony Mackie and was released in 2020. They also directed a season 2 episode of Jordan Peele's The Twilight Zone reboot.
With Benson and Moorhead joining Moon Knight, the directing team for the Disney+ series could be complete. It is unconfirmed how many episodes will be in the MCU show, and it appears Marvel Studios will fluidly change the lengths of them. WandaVision will be longer than the six-episode run most thought it would be. Since Moon Knight features a similarly unique character, Marvel could dedicate entire episodes to his different personalities. What is known, though, is that Moon Knight will begin filming in March, so it won't be long before Benson and Moorhead are on set.
Benson and Moorhead might not be instantly recognizable directors for most, but their ability to mix genres could be of great use in Moon Knight. They aren't strangers to seemingly bizarre or unbelievable stories either. However, they've shown that they can ground even the most outlandish stories to keep the focus on the characters. Moon Knight will likely feature a number of different genres, and those who have read some of his comics know just how crazy Marc Spector's stories can get at times. The hirings of Benson and Moorhead could signal that Marvel isn't going to shy away from these elements, which makes Moon Knight another tantalizing Phase 4 project.
