Bollywood: John Cho Reveals His Favorite Cowboy Bebop Character (It Isn’t Spike)

John Cho has revealed his favorite character from Cowboy Bebop. Created by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer André Nemec for Netflix, Cowboy Bebop is the live-action reimagining of the legendary 1998 anime series of the same name. The original futuristic anime chronicled the tale of a squad of bounty hunters in the year 2071 as they traveled through space on the titular ship, pinning down targets and confronting personal demons. Although the show only consisted of 26 episodes, it was massively successful and impactful, with many crediting it for popularizing anime among Western audiences. Now Netflix has retooled the franchise in a different format for both loyalists and modern viewers, scheduling Cowboy Bebop for a November 19, 2021, release.

Hailing from Tomorrow Studios and original producers Sunrise Inc., Netflix's Cowboy Bebop has been in development for about five years now. But it was only recently that fans got a good look at the show, which was through first-look images featuring the main characters, promotional posters, and an anime-loyal opening sequence that was unveiled during the Netflix global fan event, TUDUM. Although plot details on the live-action series are still slim, most of the cast has already been revealed. Star Trek's John Cho is playing the leading former hitman Spike Spiegel, while Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, Alex Hassell, and Elena Satine are attached as Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Vicious, and Julia respectively. All the actors are pretty enthusiastic about their parts in the show, although Cho is more excited for a character different than his own.

Recently, while participating in a collaborative interview as a part of Netflix's TUDUM event, John Cho responded to a question from co-star Pineda asking who is his favorite character in Cowboy Bebop. Much to Pineda's elation, Cho named her character Faye Valentine as the one he liked the most. He elaborated that Faye is his favorite because of her backstory, which is pretty intriguing and absorbing. Additionally, Faye also possesses killer survival instincts, which make her all the more loveable. Cho later jokingly added that Faye was still annoying in the scenes, to which Pineda replied that it was not much different in real life either. Read what Cho said below.

"Faye Valentine. Her story is so interesting and compelling, and her survival instincts just make for a really likable character. I mean in scenes, she's annoying."

In Cowboy Bebop, Faye is a bounty hunter and con-artist whose gambling problem has landed her in excessive debt. She was put into a cryogenic freeze for her involvement in a space shuttle mishap, wherein she spent 54 years in suspended animation. Although Pineda has quite authentically embodied her role as Faye, she has been derided for not fitting the character's original busty, sexualized, revealing design. The actress, however, had the perfect response to that criticism; she took to Instagram to sarcastically apologize on the makers' behalf as they could not find a "Six foot, double-D sized breasts, two-inch waist" woman to play Faye.

Following the sexist reactions to Pineda's casting, John Cho's support for her character solidifies that all the changes that Cowboy Bebop has made to Faye are an improvement. Faye is a character with multiple shades and layers, and there is definitely a lot to her personality, once people start looking beyond her inhumanly proportioned body parts. In the anime, her arc was quite well-written, with a strong backstory and substantial character development. Still, unfortunately, her characterization in the popular media was chauvinistically relegated to that of supporting eye candy. But now, as is evident by Cho's confidence, the Cowboy Bebop live-action series seems to have fixed the anime's mistakes, thereby offering fans a chance to catch Faye in her true glory.
