Quake Remastered In 4K For Consoles & PC, Available Today

It's time to rocket jump in 2021, as the original Quake has been remastered for PC and consoles and is available today. DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D are credited with creating the first-person shooter genre, but Quake brought the genre into the realm of 3D visuals, as earlier games (including Duke Nukem 3D) used 2.5D visuals to give the false impression of a 3D environment.

A new remaster of Quake was announced during QuakeCon 2021 and it's available today on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S for $10 (or free for existing owners). The remastered version of Quake features a graphical overhaul, with new models, dynamic shadows, and improved lighting. The visuals also have 4K resolution and widescreen resolution support. One thing it retains from the original game is the soundtrack composed by Trent Reznor from the band Nine Inch Nails, which some feared was the reason the game hadn't been remastered before. Quake has cross-play support across for its online multiplayer, which has dedicated server support for Deathmatch and co-op.

The Quake remaster also contains the retail and digital DLC expansions for the game: Scourge of Armagon, Dissolution of Eternity, and Dimension of the Past. There is also a brand new episode that was created for the game's 25th anniversary of the game, called Dimension of the Machine, which was created by Wolfenstein remake developer MachineGames. Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to play Quake at no extra cost when it goes live later today.
