Why Wolverine Really Hates Marvel's Version of the Justice League

Warning ! Spoilers for Heroes Reborn: Weapon X and Final Flight #1 below!

Wolverine hates the Squadron SupremeMarvel's version of the Justice League—for a specific reason in the Heroes Reborn universe. They did help destroy his beloved Canada but Logan hates them specifically for killing the Phoenix, his long time love Jean Grey. Wolverine, who goes by the name Weapon X in this reality, is so devoted to his war against the Squadron, he's willing to not only sacrifice his body and sanity but also jeopardize friendships and lives in revenge for something his mainstream counterpart has begrudgingly had to do to the woman he loves.

Ever since joining the X-Men, Wolverine has been infatuated with Jean Grey, a mutual attraction complicated by her love and relationship with team leader Cyclops. Everything changed when Jean became the host for the cosmic force called the Phoenix, an event that brought with it a cycle of death and resurrection for Jean and her fellow X-Men. In Heroes Reborn, the world has been reimagined without the Avengers and with the Squadron Supreme of America ruthlessly filling in in their place. In this reality, Logan is Weapon X who willingly underwent his traumatic procedure of adamantium bonding and enhancement in order to defeat the people whose war against Canada left it a decimated badlands.

After killing Hyperion in Heroes Reborn #6, Wolverine and Alpha Flight continue to fight years later in Heroes Reborn: Weapon X and Final Flight #1 by Ed Brisson, Roland Boschi, and Chris O'Halloran. As the Squadron now pursues them with a vengeance, Alpha Flight and its members are holding on by a thread, lamenting their losses and current way of life with no relief on the horizon. When Logan insists on continuing their current course, his comment that everyone knew what they signed up for enrages Walter Langkowski aka Sasquatch. He angrily claims that the war they're fighting is over and now they're in danger because of his murder of Hyperion, all because of his "wanting revenge for their killing of Jean Grey!"

The amusing thing is that this version of Wolverine seeks revenge against something that he's had to do more than once over the years. When Logan had to kill Jean in New X-Men #148, it was a mercy killing that became permanent shortly after. Her connection to the Phoenix had Logan relive this more than once, something that likely caused him further trauma and pain despite the fact he was likely killing an echo instead of his former love. Logan's killing of Jean was done to protect the world, which was likely the same reason that the Squadron killed her. It's also possible her power presented a threat to their control of their world's affairs. Although the Phoenix would find a new host in Maya Lopez, Wolverine would not let Jean's death be in vain, fighting back in his universal language of anger, death, and blood regardless of the consequences to him and his allies.

This particular instance doesn't make Wolverine a hypocrite but it does present an interesting conundrum. The Squadron kills Jean Grey, so he kills Hyperion in return, leaving both Squadron Supreme and Alpha Flight locked in a battle for revenge with only one possible outcome. Given Wolverine's penchant for remembering past lives it will be interesting to see if he feels justified, ashamed or just deja vu over his actions should he remember his Heroes Reborn life once his reality is reset.
