Beckett Trailer: John David Washington Is the Target of a Manhunt

Netflix just released a trailer for the upcoming thriller Beckett, which will hit the screen next month. Shot in Athens, the film focuses on an American tourist in Greece who ends up as the target of a manhunt after an inexplicable accident occurs involving him and his girlfriend. Produced by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria) and directed by Ferdinando Cito Filomarino, Netflix announced last January that Beckett would stream this coming summer. The official release date was confirmed for August 13, after premiering at the Locarno Film Festival on August 4th.

Netflix showcased its trailer for the action-packed film, flaunting the setting's cinematic landscape and a heart-racing musical score. Its soft opening, which shows the lead characters in a loving, tranquil state of mind, quickly transitions into a fast-paced, run-for-your-life narrative. It's hard to say exactly what exactly is going on plot wise, but it's clear there's an underlying conspiracy that involves all hands on deck. The juxtaposition of an American man in foreign territory demonstrates fear of not only the unknown but the unfamiliar. What starts off as a vacation turns into a whirlwind of terror and a fight to survive. Watch the trailer here:

More: Is John David Washington Related To Denzel Washington?

Starring John David Washington (Malcom & Marie, BlacKkKlansman) and Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider, The Danish Girl, Ex-Machina), Beckett seems like a gem that came up out of nowhere. Though it's only Filomarino's second film as a director, having Guadagnino as a producer speaks volumes about the film's potential. Despite their differences in theme and genre, both Suspiria and Call Me by Your Name were highly-regarded for a variety of cinematic elements that broke formulaic boundaries in a way that had yet to be seen. While the trailer looks promising, it remains to be seen if Beckett achieves the same groundbreaking success.
