Wynonna Earp Season 5: What To Expect | Screen Rant

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Wynonna Earp series finale.

Will there be another last-minute reprieve for the SyFy supernatural series Wynonna Earp and if so, what can audiences expect for Wynonna Earp season 5?  The series, created by Emily Andras and based on the comic books of the same name, premiered in 2016. It quickly developed a loyal cult following for its quirky, offbeat take on Wyatt Earp’s heir, Wynonna, and her magical demon-killing six-shooter named Peacemaker.

Wynonna’s adventures hunting demons while navigating a complicated romance with the seemingly ageless Doc Holliday is the heart of the show, but other characters eventually became just as important. Her half-sister Waverly’s love affair with Sheriff Nicole Haught was applauded for its positive LGBTQ+ representation. While never a huge rating success, the loyal Wynonna Earp fan base successfully fought tirelessly for the show's survival.

Story-wise, the fourth and final season of Wynonna Earp may rank among its strongest. The show took great care to end on a hopeful note for all the characters. Half-angel Waverly married her long-time love and new Angel’s Shield, Nicole, in a touching ceremony. Jeremy got a promotion and appeared to be ready to move on from his heartbreak over losing Robin. Doc decided he wanted to see the world as a mortal man. And most importantly, Wynonna and Doc declared their love for one another and, like all good Westerns, rode off into the sunset together on the back of Wynonna’s motorcycle to be reunited with their infant daughter, Alice.

The short answer to whether or not there will be a Wynonna Earp season 5 is, at the moment, no. Although Syfy had renewed the show for a fifth season in 2018, a series of factors, including COVID, led the network to cancel the show in February 2021. When the Wynonna Earp parent company IDW suffered financial difficulties that interrupted season 4's production, some of the show’s loyal fans purchased billboards in New York's Times Square in hopes of attracting a backer. The Canadian distributor Space stepped up and production resumed after a lengthy delay. Last month, creator Emily Andras announced she is still shopping for a new home for Wynonna Earp season 5 on a major streaming service, from IMDbTV to Paramount+ and Hulu, so while it looks unlikely, there is a chance the show could rise once again from the ashes.

While a fifth season of  Wynonna Earp appears unlikely, if one were to occur, the earliest estimates for production to begin would be late in the fall of 2021. That would push the date for a season 5 to air in mid to late 2022. The show would need to find a new production company and it would take time to ramp things back up. Multiple factors would have to be considered, such as availability of the cast, as some are already at work on other projects, and how quickly scripts could be written.

Key to Wynonna Earp's success was the chemistry between the extremely talented cast. If season 5 were to happen, audiences could expect the main and strong supporting cast members to return: Melanie Scrofano as Wynonna, Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday, Dominque Provost-Chalkley as Waverly, Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught, and Varun Seranga as Jeremy would almost certainly return. It's also likely that Greg Lawson would reprise his role as Randy Nedley and that season 4 newcomers Martina Ortiz-Luis and Billy Bryk would return as Rachel Valdez and Billy Clanton, respectively, seeing where the season 4 finale left off.

Although Wynonna Earp has ended, that does not mean there could not be more adventures for the Earp sisters. Should a fifth season be possible or a revival film one day, there are still plenty of stories to be told. A new season could explore Wynonna and Doc’s reunion with Baby Alice in Miracles, Montana, and their new adventure in co-parenting while still trying to hammer out their tumultuous relationship. They left the Ghost River Triangle in good hands with newlyweds Waverly and Nicole, the new Angel’s Shield, who will be hard at work bringing the humans, revenants, and other residents of the Ghost River Triangle together into a peaceful coexistence. With being promoted to the head of the Black Badge Ghost River Bureau, Jeremy will likely find new challenges in his role as the high-level middle man between the U.S. government and the residents of the Ghost River Triangle. And finally, do not forget that Eve is still lurking out there somewhere. For now, Wynonna Earp has come to a close but that doesn't mean there's not always hope for more.
