MCU: The 10 Most Disappointing Things That Happened In The Movies

Most fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe know that the heroes are interesting because they aren’t always ethical or even good. While the main protagonists of the series might try to do the right things and save others, they do have many flaws that can get in the way. They can be selfish and rash and make poor choices that end up hurting others around them.

While some of the heroes have a worse track record than others, they all make missteps to one degree or another. In this list, we look at the most disappointing things that the main heroes from the story have done, really letting fans down.

10 Spider-Man: Gave the glasses to Mysterio

Peter Parker is really just a high school kid who finds himself facing a lot of struggles, especially after the death of Tony Stark. This death obviously impacts him a lot, and he’s trying to find his way in the world as a hero in his own right.

So, while it's hard to blame him given his age and how Mysterio manipulated him, giving the glasses that Tony left to him to Mysterio was a bad move with many consequences. Fans were likely yelling at the screen telling him not to do it.

9 Thor: Giving up on being King of Asgard

This is another decision that seems more like a mistake on the part of the creators of the films than anything else because it wasn’t that in line with Thor’s narrative arc up to this point.

While Thor’s trilogy had spent a lot of time setting Thor up to be the King he was meant to be, this was all taken away in Avengers: Endgame when he gave up. While Valkyrie will make a great leader, it seemed like a weird way to handle Thor’s story. Fans wanted to see him truly live up to his finally realized potential.

8 Black Widow: Trusted in SHIELD too much

Black Widow obviously has done a lot of horrible things in her past, and fans know that she has a “red ledger” as it’s called. But in many ways, she was more of a victim than anything else, given how young she was when she was trained in the way she was.

However, her loyalty to SHIELD and to Fury sometimes got in the way. Fans were disappointed that Black Widow trusted a government organization so blindly and never questioned what their true motives were.

7 Hulk: Gave up on being Bruce Banner

There are many characters in Avengers: Endgame who had rather different storylines and arcs than they’d had in previous movies. Quite a few fans were upset when Burce Banner merged into a version of himself that was half him and half Hulk.

While this was supposed to be seen as character growth, it just felt more like he had given up. It would have been better if he had been able to still be Bruce but just gained more control over turning into the Hulk.

6 Black Panther: Went outside the Accords to take justice into his own hands

Black Panther is probably one of the most likable and overall ethical heroes of any in the MCU, so his mistakes aren’t very grievous. However, he did act rashly when he tried to kill Bucky, who was being framed by Zemo, after his father’s death.

It is difficult to blame him though as he was consumed with grief, and he also received his miscalculation as soon as he learned the truth and even offered Bucky a safe place to live. Still, as he was one of the supporters of the Accords, this immediate rejection of them seemed like a strange choice.

5 Captain America: Went back to live in the past

While some fans liked Steve Rogers ending, many others didn’t as they felt it was out of character and didn’t send a good message. It felt like all of the character development done with Steve was urged to give him a forced happy ending.

And, when you think about it, Steve would be living in the past while awful things happened that he knew about but didn’t stop. It’s hard to see him as heroic because of this.

4 Star-Lord: Ruined the plan to get the Infinity Gauntlet

One of the most frustrating things that ever happened in the MCU was when Star-Lord ruined the plan to remove the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos. While Quill might have been overcome with grief over losing Gamora, he acted so rashly and over emotionally that he screwed everything up.

Without him, they would have gotten the gauntlet and likely could have kept the Snap from ever happening. Given that Peter Quill can already be such an arrogant character, it didn’t win him points with most fans.

3 Iron Man: Created Ultron

Tony Stark is one of the Avengers who marks the most mistakes, and he definitely goes on a journey from being a selfish jerk to actually caring about others. However, even as he tries to be a hero and save others, he lets his own ego and fears get in the way.

Making Ultron was something he should never have done, and it was just one example in many of Iron Man needing to have some oversight and not just think he could do whatever he wanted.

2 Scarlet Witch: Controlled an entire town

Scarlet Witch has actually done quite a lot of bad things in her life including that she basically worked with HYDRA and then with Ultron. However, possibly the worst thing she did, and the one she has the most responsibility for, is when she basically controlled the entire town of Westview just to create the fantasy life she wanted.

Even after learning what she had done, she still tried to justify it at first. Some fans were disappointed in her lack of contrition.

1 Hawkeye: Becoming a vigilante killer

Hawkeye is another Avenger who does something fairly unforgivable. After he loses his family in the Blip, he becomes a vigilante of sorts who kills criminals.

However, taking this kind of justice into his own hands felt quite problematic especially as he was mainly targeting people in Asian countries. Yet, he’s basically accepted back as a hero with no repercussions. Many fans were disappointed to see him go down this path and disappointed to see a lack of reflection on it from the character.
